Associated Press: 3 Sacred Heart Lacrosse Players Accused Of Sexual Assault

US Lacrosse first broke the story on their twitter feed.  More information as it emerges…but needless to say having the word “lacrosse” tied in with these allegations gives flashbacks (justified or not) to the Duke trial all over again.

3 Conn. lacrosse players accused of sexual assault

(AP) – 3 hours ago

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — Three players on Sacred Heart University’s men’s lacrosse team have been charged with sexually assaulting an 18-year-old female student.

Police charged 18-year-old Nicholas Travers of Smithtown, N.Y., 18-year-old Zachari Triner of Mansfield, Mass., and 19-year-old Timothy Sanders of Ashburn, Va., with conspiracy to commit first-degree sexual assault Sunday.

The Connecticut Post reports that authorities say Sanders and the woman were having consensual sex in a dorm, when Sanders suddenly summoned the other two men to the room. Police say Travers and Triner sexually assaulted the woman while Sanders held her down.

Sanders’ lawyer says the allegations are “grossly exaggerated.” Police say Triner denied touching the girl, and Travers denied knowing anything about what happened.

UPDATE: When Deadspin runs a story about lacrosse, chances are it’s not to sing praise for the sport from the rooftops.

Lacrosse Players Accused Of Terrible Things, Media Braces For Impact

Three Sacred Heart University lacrosse players have been charged with “conspiracy to commit sexual assault” on a female student in their dorm. Less surprising is that coverage of this story is already turning into a potential quagmire of hyperbolic accusations.

    • I find it crazy that stories like this get posted so quickly by news publications.

The lives of all 4 people involved (and many others) could be tarnished for years in any number of ways regardless of whether the allegations are true or not. Also, we are very aware, as a society, about victims of rape and I think that showing concern like that is very much needed. However, we have also seen instances where the accused turned into the victims and having their names out in public isn't much better (especially if they are eventually cleared). I'm sure some Criminal Law JD could fill me in here but all in all the almost instant access to info really only seems to retard cases instead of make them clearer. Controversial topic and I'm SURE I missed something or got something wrong so feel free to chime in.
