Our first-year varsity HS program has been stuck a 1950s-sized elementary-school gym (half of a normal basketball court) for the last few weeks due to wet and/or frozen weather in the Southeast. Our solution to teaching set offense under these conditions? Ditch the pads and sticks, and use a handball. We have about 15 years of coaching combined between us (head coach is certified but I'm certifiably crazy), and we have never seen players pick up set offensive plays so quickly.

Well put!! I really liked the fact that you stressed the importance of the coach and actually coaching. Far too often I have come across people who pride themselves on being a great coach, but does not know how to teach. The two need to co-exist to thrive!

One rule I've tried to follow as a field lax coach is whatever drill is practiced by a shorty should be practiced by a pole and vice versa. One of my favourite drills are the various fast break drills and changing up who fast breaks on who (4 shorties vs 3 poles, 2 poles 2 shorties vs 3 attack).

Obviously you want your poles and middies to understand their slide packages, but it's important to get all your players capable of playing with and without the ball on offense and defense.
