Whew, what a day! All I can say is that I wish Rhino Lacrosse Camps were around when I was growing up. This is such a huge opportunity for kids (and even coaches) to learn from the greats of the lacrosse world. Rhino Lacrosse truly does offer a one of a kind experience for its campers. One of the coaches, Uncle Marty, described it as a family atmosphere, and that is exactly what it is!
Players are divided up by age into D1, D2 and D3 and given teams within their division. This allows players to take full advantage of the number of coaches available and really work on their individual games. Players get many reps and helpful suggestions from the coaching staff, and it was fun to see some of them step back and tweak their game to try to reach that next level.
After splitting up into divisions tt the beginning of the day, we focused on fundamentals for off each age group. After some solid learning we regrouped and watched a demonstration on fast-breaks by Ryan Powell for the offense and Joel White and John Galloway for the defense.
After working on the aforementioned fast-breaks, we split up into teams and had the first round of games before lunch. The players headed to their lunch pails and the coaches met up for some chatter and pizza.
Lunch was ended in style as some of the players mustered up the courage to show off their best in a stick trick competition. It was quite the show for sure. Edna from the girl’s camp won the tournament with a strong showing through each round.
After Edna graciously accepted her winnings, we moved on to the afternoon session of position stations and then another round of games to work towards deciding the camp champs. Players divided into groups of goalies, defense, middies and attack and were able to pick up some great tips of the trade from the coaches who specialized in each position.
Rhino Lacrosse may give a lot of knowledge to the campers, but coaches also ask for just as much hustle in return. This is really an honor for me to be able to attend the camps, just like the campers, and I am trying to be a sponge and take in as much knowledge as I possibly can from all of the great coaches they’ve has brought together.
