St. John’s Wins BIG At The Big City Classic, 9-8. How Is That Possible?

St. John’s beat Rutgers 9-8 in the first game of the Big City Classic, and while it wasn’t broadcast on ESPNU, it probably should have been!  What a game.  It was close the whole way and I took parts of the game in from the stands, the Easton Lacrosse zone and I even went up to the Press Box for a couple moments.  I have to admit, I don’t love watching a lax game from up there.  Just feel awfully removed.  Guess I’m still a fan at heart…

Charlie Holenstein was scoring like crazy early on.

One of the big stories of the game was obviously Charlie Holenstein notching 4 goals on only 5 shots.  All of his goals came in the first half and St. John’s was up 6-5.  Holenstein was named Kinoca Minolta Player of the Game for that effort.  Kieran McArdle also performed well on offense as he notched a goal and four helpers.

Kieran McArdle is pumped!

Rutgers took the opening face off in for a goal but only 6 seconds later, St. John’s got a fastbreak rip off the face and the game was tied at 1 only 14 seconds in.  Like I said, exciting lacrosse.  The teams traded blows and when St. John’s went up 7-6, they were up for good.  But it was close throughout and kept the fans on the edges of their seats.

Elation and Dejection, all in one shot.

This is St. John’s 3rd win of the year (3-6) and second in a row.  They have a huge game with Providence coming up this week and need to do well in Big East play to finish their season on a positive note.  The Red Storm were good on special teams and were excellent when clearing the ball, only turning it over once.  10 saves in net don’t hurt either!  Are the boys in Queens heading in the right direction?  It’s only one win, but their game against Rutgers says yes.
