Wembley vs. Subiaco Kicks Off Western Australia Lacrosse Season

Editor’s Note: The 2012 Lacrosse Season Opener in Western Australia is only a week away.  The game will feature the Wembley Lacrosse Club and Subiaco, and this is a rematch of last season’s championship game, which Wembley won.  Below you can find more info on the game and opening of the WA Lacrosse season from Shendelle Oliver of the Wembley LC.

To brush up on your ANZAC Day knowledge, check out Wikipedia’s entry. ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps and marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War.

The Wembley Lacrosse Club will start its 2012 Premiership Season on Wednesday, the 25th of April 2012.  The exciting Men’s State League season opener is the ANZAC Day clash where the Wembley Wolves will take on the much improved Subiaco Lions. The teams are competing for the John R. Ferguson and Arthur A.Swan ANZAC Day Trophy.

Face off is at 2:15PM at Subiaco Lacrosse Club, Rosalie Park, Subiaco. A traditional Anzac Day ceremony will be held at 2pm with the playing of the ‘Last Post.’

Wembley goes into the game as clear favorites, winning the 2011 State League final and defeating Subiaco in most of the ANZAC Day games since the inaugural ANZAC game day event in 2003.

Wembley Captain Matt Diver said, “It’s a really exciting way to start the season. The boys have been training hard and we are all very motivated by the heroes that were the ANZACs, so we’ve got a lot to play for.”

Diver returns to field this ANZAC Day with a big season ahead. In October 2011 Diver was awarded Isaachsen Trophy from Lacrosse Australia, which is the Australian Lacrosse equivalent to the Brownlow Medal given out in Australian Rules Football (EN: the Brownlow is given to the fairest and best player.  Think MVP, Tewaaraton or Heisman).

Diver has now started training and preparation for selection in the 2013-14 Australian Lacrosse team that will head to Denver for the World Championships. Other Wembley players hoping for Australian team selection include Co-Captain Alex Brown and Goalkeeper Sam Williams, who both played in the 2010 World Championships.
