Alphabetical 2013 NCAA D1 Preview: Robert Morris

We’re breaking down each and every NCAA D1 team one by one to get prepped for the rapidly approaching season. Welcome back to the Alphabetical 2013 NCAA D1 Previews! We move another spot down the list and the Robert Morris Colonials, located in Moon, PA, are up for Preview!

2012 saw Robert Morris go 11-4 with a bunch of good wins and a heartbreaking loss at the end to Mount St. Mary’s. RMU started off 3-0 with close wins over Bellarmine, UMBC, and Air Force. They dropped a game Denver, and then again to Colgate, before rattling off wins over OSU and Hobart. A 17-10 loss to Bucknell set them up for wins over Canisius, Wagner, Sacred Heart, MSM, Quinnipiac, and Bryant, before MSM ended their season.

2013 sees a couple of repeat match ups in Bellarmine, UMBC, Hobart, and the rest of their NEC schedule. RMU also plays Detroit, Drexel, Dartmouth, Jacksonville, and St. John’s. It’s a good line up of games, and provides a lot of opportunities for the Colonials to rack up a lot of wins.

Robert Morris has 12 Canadians on their squad, and Jake Hayes and Dave Morton lead the way at attack, returning 110 points between the two of them. Tyler Digby also returns and the big man could see increased production now that a couple of big time scorers (like Kiel Matisz) have graduated. All four of those guys named came from North of the border. The rest of the RMU offense isn’t especially big, but there is a lot of scoring talent there, and like I said… plenty of Canadians.

RMU used three goalies last year, and each started at least three games. I don’t know that there is another D1 team that can say that. Dillon Pope, Matt Bukovac, and Charles Ruppert all return, and it will be really interesting to see if 2013 is a repeat of 2012, or if one guy emerges as the starter. When it comes to longsticks, RMU should be good to go. Joe Scenna, Ben Lewis, and Luc Magnan bring back a lot of game experience, and RMU has solid depth at LSM.

Robert Morris lost some talent, especially on offense, to graduation, but brings back a solid core of scorers and plenty of experience, to go along with a small-sized, but talented group of young players. With plenty of winnable games on their schedule, look for RMU to have another solid winning season.
