Music Monday: Hosted by Michael Martelle, UC Irvine

Editor’s note: Please welcome Michael Martelle to Music Monday! Michael is a history major at the University of California, Irvine, where he plays for the school’s MCLA Division 2 lacrosse team. He is also a semi-professional guitar player, and his life is pretty dominated and defined by both lax and music.

I figured I’d give all you folks a nice little grab bag of tunes here… some warmup tracks, some long-forgotten gems, some goofball songs, and maybe a couple groups from the area that I think deserve a listen or two.

…and we’re off!

“Still Alive” by Mt Eden Dubstep

First track I ever heard from this dubstep outfit from New Zealand, made me a solid fan. Video game fans may recognize the vid graphics. I like having Mt Eden in a warmup mix, but I keep it on headphones. I don’t think anybody else likes this much mellow in their pump-up time, but I’ve always like something at this pace to get the concentration going.

From there we go to an LA based band that’s making waves in the hardcore (hardcore? yes, I’d call ‘em hardcore) world. I was always of the personal opinion that hardcore was a sound that was waiting for somebody to do right, and then these folks put out an album. Not a guitar solo or breakdown on the entire thing, just a genuine and tasteful outpouring.

“Day 54” by Letlive

Now I’ll give you my (current) favorite track from my (current) favorite band. I’d love to see somebody put this on a highlight reel.

“Stop” by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club

We go from there to the goofy. . . a fun mashup from the Super Mash Bros. (I’ll throw a “parental advisory” on this one if anybody cares, or is within speaker-shot of somebody who does)

Super Mash Bros

Gonna jump into the time machine for this one. These guys have always intrigued me for music-history reasons, but this is a lax blog so I’ll spare you. Look ‘em up if your interested.

“Kick Out The Jams” by MC5

[fvplayer src=”https://youtube.com/watch?v=iM6nasmkg7A”]

I’ll throw another one at your pregame mix (if your into the same pregame mix that I am). One of the greatest voices in music today paired with one of the greatest backing bands of all time doing a song from one of the greatest decades for RnB.

“Our Generation” by John Legend & The Roots

[fvplayer src=”https://youtube.com/watch?v=ji6kQl71TYU”]

Another dubstepper, I’ll let this one fill the silence without my help.

“Art of Revolution” by Bassnectar

This one comes from across the pond. They get bonus points for lighting the stage on fire.

“Fire” by Kasabian

To close this playlist, I’ll include something with a little more personal significance.

I wasn’t always a resident of the great sunny CA, I was born in Detroit and lived there for my first handful of years. This blind man used to sing the blues to passers-by in the Detroit Central Market for change. A band heard him, decided they found their new lead singer, and made my favorite song about the state I’m living in. Hope you like it.

“California” by Robert Bradley’s Blackwater Surprise

Thanks to Brunelle for giving me the chance to talk music with you. I wish you all life, love, lax, and tunes for all three.
