Don’t Limit Opportunity

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen!

This morning, I spent time looking at a math problem that someone posted on Facebook. It was a “new” method of solving what was a very simple equation for probably most people above 3rd grade. As I looked at this method, I couldn’t help but think, “OK, I’ve seen some new methods of doing things, elementary and middle school, but this is just dumb.” As I did some research I finally found out what was going on. I still think it’s dumb, but I now at least understand something (new, or a variation of something new) that young people are apparently being taught in a lot of places. Maybe only ever so slightly, I’ve expanded my knowledge base. You can try the math for yourself below, if you’d like.

It’s often too easy and too convenient for us to write something off as dumb/pointless/(insert dismissive adjective here ________) because we don’t understand it, don’t like where it’s coming from, or because it’s not the way we prefer it be said or done. The problem isn’t the worthiness or lack thereof of the idea, practice, suggestion. It’s the lack of willingness to understand it. Remember, understanding does not require enjoyment, or agreement. It just requires enough humility, or sometimes patience, to learn.

When we’re quick to write ideas and people off, by default, we diminish an opportunity to learn. We limit our capacity for growth.

Make it a GREAT day!

Stay blessed.
