Game Photos: Metropolitan Classic

Tommy Gilligan was at Citi Field in Queens today shooting the Metropolitan Classic. It sounds like the stadium provided a good viewing experience from most accounts. We didn’t get to see the Navy – Holy Cross game on TV, but from all indications, and our man on the ground, it was really good.

Holy Cross improved to 4-3 with their 7-5 win over the Midshipmen, who fall to 3-5 on the season. Terry McKenna had four goals and a helper for five points to lead HC on offense, and freshman goalie Michael Ortlieb had 12 big saves in net. Something worth nothing: this is Holy Cross first ever win over Navy.

In the other game, which was broadcast on ESPNU, Colgate outgunned Michigan in a pretty competitive game, 10-7. It was a pleasure to watch, and I enjoy watching Michigan improve every time I see them. I also love watching Peter Baum. He certainly has a certain confidence to his game, doesn’t he? That’s stating the obvious.

Ryan Walsh and Peter Baum both scored three goals for Colgate, Baum added a couple helpers, and the Raiders looked very dangerous at times, and good on D, with athletic poles. The all black look was a nice touch, and it’s nice to see a team win with a new look once in a while.

Colgate is now 6-2 and faces Navy on March 23rd. Michigan drops yet another close game to go 0-8 on the season. They face Loyola next on March 23rd. Michigan might not be winning, but they are definitely more competitive. It’s a big step if you stop and think about it.
