What Matters Down the Road

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen!

Last night with one of the gentlemen with whom I coach, I was discussing the evolution of one of our players from the end of his 8th grade season to now, the beginning of his senior season. He mentioned a handful of interactions that they’d had over the last couple of years, mostly regarding the manner in which the young man was approaching his lacrosse career. He’d asked him at various points – and I’m paraphrasing – What is your primary agenda with playing lacrosse? And usually there was an answer that revolved around on field success; winning a district championship or trying to make a run at the state playoffs. So at one point, this coach pointed out that, every year there’s a state champion, and out of all the young men in the state that are playing, there are only 25-30 every year that get to experience it. Most people do not. This is the same thing in all sports. I read in Benjamin Watson’s blog the other day that out of all the men that have played in the NFL, there are only about 3000 men that can claim that they were ever Super Bowl champions… EVER. So what are playing for? Sure we want to compete for championships, but when we look back, not winning a championship will not be the deciding factor in how enjoyable our time was. I was on a state championship basketball team – the only state championship I was a part of in high school – and the experience was one of the least enjoyable of my whole high school career.

So the question is, when we are 80 or 90 years old, what are the things that will matter? What are the things, events, experiences, accomplishments by which we will define our own lives? Not how others will define our lives, how we will define our own lives. From there we can work backward to set our goals, and to lay out a plan. Are you working now, toward where you want to be in 30, 40, 50, 60 years from now?

Make it a GREAT day!

Stay blessed.
