Speak For Yourself

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen!

I’m for truth, no matter who tells it. I’m for justice, no matter who it’s for or against. – Malcolm X

One thing that I’ve observed when it comes to athletes and other celebrities regarding taking stances or making public statements regarding social (in)justice and equality is that we – the general population – are very quick to pick and choose what things they should speak up on. We often condemn silence. And we simultaneously condemn them for speaking their minds on things that in the grand scheme are very insignificant. We can’t have it both ways. And we can’t decide for anyone else, how important a particular issue is to somebody else, no matter how important it may be to us.

Similarly, we have to be willing, on a relatable scale, to risk our own livelihoods and investments to make the statements and take the stands that we feel others should make. I can’t expect anyone else to make a statement on an issue that’s important to me in a manner that puts their position/finances/family/other at risk, if I’m not willing to do that for the same cause.

We must be the change we wish to see in the world.

It’s important that we are careful not to expect more of others than we expect of ourselves, particularly when it comes to standing up for what we believe in. If WE believe in something or are significantly opposed to something, it’s up to US to make our own statments and to take our own stances rather than bemoning the way others do or do not do so. The problem is that doing it ourselves is riskier and far more exhausting.

Make it a GREAT day!

Stay blessed.
