Earth Shattering D1 Rundown

This week may not have been full of the earth shattering results of the past few weeks, but that doesn’t mean there was a lack of some excellent action going on! There was! And I covered it all! Now I’m exhausted and will be useless all week. Great.

There were definitely a few upsets, some head scratching blowouts, and enough odd results to make people, like Connor, who vote in the poll, really challenge their opinions of different teams.

The Stat Freaks

Freak of the week: Myles Jones.

There was really no other choice. It was a Tobacco Road rivalry game between Duke and UNC, going into overtime, and Jones had a monstrous 11 points (as a middie!), but couldn’t quite seal the win. He had a short stick in the alley in overtime and his twelfth point would have won the game, but instead, they lost.

That’s OK, though, because this part of the article only cares about stats, not who wins or loses. The only losers here are those poor people who have to keep entering numbers into a computer instead of enjoying an awesome game. But thanks stat keepers!

Earth Shattering Upsets and Surprises

  • I might as well start with Notre Dame’s 17-7 demolishing of Syracuse which really spoiled the celebratory mood of the Carrier Dome. The Orange held a ceremony at halftime bringing as many alumni as they could out onto the field. With that much star power in the house, everyone was hoping for a big second half comeback that never came. After the game, both head coaches were at a loss for answers to explain what had happened. Syracuse’s John Desko had no excuse for his team’s across the board poor performance while Notre Dame’s Kevin Corrigan could not explain the Irish’s sudden excellence.  Corrigan was in a much better mood with his confusion, though.

  • Friday’s night’s game between Duke and North Carolina did not disappoint. A true back and forth affair, the Tar Heels seized their opportunity to win on a slightly broken play after Myles Jones’ attempt at a game winner was saved on the other end. While Jones missed that shot, he made almost all others and had a monster night. It was the type of game everyone wants to see from him regularly.
  • Since the other ACC teams were beating up on each other, Virginia kept themselves occupied by facing in-state foe Richmond.  This is the same Richmond team that went to Duke and took down the Blue Devils. This is the same Virginia that was sitting at 5-5 on the season. I say was because they topped Richmond 9-0. Yes, they shut out the Spiders. If you don’t know what to make of that, you’re not alone. This is yet another confusing data point in a confusing season.
  • In non-ACC Action, Brown absolutely dismantled a Villanova team that had the makings of a championship weekend content. Well, they still do, but some more doubt was cast on them for sure. Brown on the other had is looking as strong as ever.
  • In B1G action, Michigan gave Maryland quite a scare with the Terps only winning by a single goal. Bryan Cole scored the game winner with just 43 seconds left. Michigan is at the bottom of the league, but they have been in all but two of their games this year. Maryland’s slate gets no easier with Penn State next up followed by a surging Rutgers.
  • Speaking of Rutgers, their 16-9 win over Hopkins puts the Scarlet Knights on the right foot as the start their conference play. They only have two losses, but both are a little puzzling. A three point loss to a struggling Princeton team and a nine point loss to Stony Brook would not suggest a they are a team that would top Hopkins by seven. But then again, it is the 2016 NCAA lacrosse season.
  • Also, last but certainly not least, Hampton lost to VMI by a bad score of 25-4. I bring this up simply because that game marks the end of Hampton’s first season of D1 lacrosse. They now get to hop on the recruiting trail early and continue to build on what they start in 2016. Get ready for the Pirates and they look to keep making history!

The biggest drop here was the Patriot who took a couple of out of conference losses during the week while everyone else picked up a few wins. The ACC is still the conference to beat as a whole, despite their vulnerability.  With more and more teams focusing on conference play, one or two losses by teams outside of their league can really move this table quite a bit as there won’t be as many opportunities to balance things out.
