Case Of The Buts

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen! Happy Friday!
The word “but.” A tricky little word, It was in my persuasive communications course in college that I learned how damaging a word it can be. Simply put, the word but negates everything that came before it. When you use the word in discussion, people tend to remember or focus on only what you say after it. And if they ackowledge both the before and after, then they usually find your statement to be in conflict. It comes across as contradictory, and leaves the listener/audience to determine the message, rather than you, the speaker, doing so.

Why is it important? The word but negates the power of our words and often blocks our opportunities.

“I want to lose weight, but…” “I want my kids to, but…” “I’m ready, but…” “I’ve always wanted, but…” “I love, but….” “I’m hoping, but…” “I think, but….”

The word but gives us an easy, reasonable, and sometimes excusable out. That out, is a built in and accessible roadblock, however. It keeps us from having to make the choices that we need to make in order to bring forth into our lives whatever it is that we want.

Don’t give yourself a case of the buts. Go after what you want. It’s not too late to get going on it this week. And it’s definitely not too early to begin setting up for next week.

Make it a GREAT day, and a GREAT weekend!

Stay blessed.
