Lacrosse is alive and well in Nebraska

Think that lacrosse is only relevant on the coasts? Think again. The Creighton Bluejays lacrosse program in Omaha, Nebraska has been a constant contender in the MCLA Division 2 for the past four years and recently completed a sweep of Division 1 opponent Iowa and fellow D2 team DePaul on their first weekend of action.

Creighton Lacrosse President Kent Lighthall talks about the Jays hot start:

“…We had 2 big wins in our first weekend at the University of Iowa. The game against Iowa was tough as it always is. It resulted in a 9-8 win for the Bluejays. There were a number of top performers in the game. Freshman Peter Bermes had 2 goals and 1 assist, while Junior Michael Carmody and Senior Tyler Craven each had 1 goal and 2 assists each. Sophomore
goalie Kevin Wiederin had a big game in goal with 12 saves. It was a great team effort and showed we are ready to take on the season.

The second game of the double header provided an exciting game against DePaul. DePaul came out with an improved offense but it wasn’t too much for the defense to handle. The Creighton defense stepped up big and stifled the potent offense numerous times. Goalie Kevin Wiederin did his part, posting 16 saves. Top performers were Senior Midfielder Kent Lighthall with 7 goals and Junior Attackman Michael Carmody with 1 goal and 5 assists. The final score ended up as a 14-11 victory for the Bluejays to start their season 2-0.”
