Major League Lacrosse Weekly Recap: Upset City!

What a weekend of Major League Lacrosse! The top dogs lost to an expansion franchise in a thriller, an underdog took TWO games in two days from a supposed contender, one team looks improved, and one team is living in Struggle City right now. The MLL is in the heart of its season, and at this point, all bets are pretty much off!

We got to see Jovan Miller make SportsCenter’s Top Ten with his acrobatic goal, and many were shaking their heads that it wasn’t #1.

Rochester Rattlers Beat LI Lizards… TWICE!

Every game is a battle, and beating any MLL team is tough, but beating the same MLL team twice in one weekend is even tougher, especially when that team is athletic, skilled and looking to make 2012 their season. I thought Rochester would take the first game in this Home and Away series, but I was surprised to see them win the second as well. It just proves that if you can win when it counts, the early losses aren’t necessarily the end of the world. And I love a league like that!

Ned Crotty was back, and excellent in action. Jordan MacIntosh kept scoring, the Rochester defense (especially John Galloway) was on, and Rochester won face off and face off on Saturday night.

Is Rochester the 2012 version of the 2011 Hamilton Nationals? If they make it to Championship Weekend… Maybe!

Boston Cannons Escape The Hamilton Nationals

The Boston Cannons were the only favored team to win this weekend, and they did so by just 3 goals over the struggling Hamilton Nationals, winning the game 16-13 on the road. There were a ton of pretty, assisted goals in this game, and the sticks were absolutely flying on defense. Lots of big checks, pretty moves and some great backside looks by both teams.

Hamilton is in serious need of wins right now, and if they don’t win out, or come close to winning out, it’s looking like the playoffs may be a thing of dreams. With the loss, the Nats are now 2-6 and in 7th place, just one win ahead of the Ohio Machine. The Charlotte Hounds sit half a game up on the Nats in 6th place at 3-6.

Charlotte Hounds Shock Chesapeake Bayhawks

I would say that the Hounds winning here shocked the world, but to be honest, I did call this upset three days before it happened. I said the Hounds would win 14-13, and they ended up winning 13-12 in the last minute of action off a Matt Danowski 2-pointer.

It was the game of the year for Charlotte, and a HUGE win for the Hounds. Charlotte could actually make the playoffs now, especially if they can rack up a couple more wins against teams like Rochester, Boston, Long Island and Denver, who all sit above the Hounds in the standings. In fact, of their remaining games, the only team the Hounds play again ranked below Charlotte is Hamilton, and that’s only one game!

The Hounds have their destiny in their own hands here, and I’m intrigued to see how they do the rest of the way, especially after that MONSTER win over the Bayhawks!
