Now that the 2011 Bump & Grind Tournament is regrettably over, and the Salt Shakerz are back to the miserable weather in the Northeast, let’s review the club’s wishlist heading into a weekend in paradise (South Beach—get there—ASAP) and see if the team was able to accomplish its goals.

The team battled through the adversity caused by the weather last week, came together as a squad, and put forth a very tasty effort all weekend on the fields at Amelia Earhart Park in Hialeah, Florida.  Some guys landed at 3:30am on Friday and others actually had to drive from Orlando to Miami!

Bump & Grind turned out to be successful tournament for the Shakerz in every way possible except for the hardware department.  In addition to all the fun everyone had off the field, the club played some great lacrosse and went 2-1 during round robin play, which earned the team a spot in the 6 team playoffs.  Unfortunately, the Salt Shakerz were unable to maintain their winning ways from Laxvegas and lost to Stickhead ProAthletics 12-11 in an intense, and hard fought playoff game.

The game even involved some controversy as Shakerz tournament MVP Chris Daniello dodged 2 guys and then hit his second 2 pointer of the game with 8 seconds left to tie it up– only to have the goal declared a 1 pointer by a ref standing 30 feet away (yikes!).  On the plus side, as these two teams have seen eachother during the playoffs in consecutive years, a nice little rivalry has developed and the Shakerz are certainly looking forward to next year and a new opportunity to get past the great squad that Stickhead seems to always put together.

The Brine Kings ended up tournament champions after beating Stickhead-Pro Athletics in the final.

Shakerz game notes:

Game #1 Salt Shakerz beat Metro Margarita Man 8-7 (OT)

Game #2 Lacrossewear/Headstrong beat Salt Shakerz 9-3

Game #3 Salt Shakerz beat The Renegades 13-2

Playoffs: Stickhead-Pro Athletics beat Salt Shakerz 12-11

Chris Daniello collected the team MVP award (Pink Brine Blueprint) after putting up the game winner in the first game vs. Margarita Men, and a couple 2 pointers throughout the balance of the tourney.  Although Daniello collected the hardware, as predicted, the Shakerz got HUGE play on the defensive end from newcomers Owen Corso and Ray Megill.  Corso, a ground ball machine, was all over the field at LSM, and Megill was just a beast, stripping sticks left and right and even taking some face-offs for the squad.  The Shakerz’ offense was very balanced, with most if not all of the Attack/Mids getting points throughout the weekend.

Off the field, the Shakerz stormed South Beach like it was Normandy.  The purchase of the weekend was a $20 volleyball, which thanks to the courts on Ocean Drive, probably got more use than anything else.  Apparently the Shakerz on the courts put on a good show because they got filmed while they were playing to be on an upcoming episode of the “Chasing Classic Cars” on the Discovery Channel!

The lifeguard houses are… outrageous. Miami.

Although the Salt Shakerz did not walk away with the crown at this year’s tourney in South Beach, we had another ridiculous trip that’s gonna go down in the history books.  The club is looking forward to its next tournament, Jam by the Sea, in April out in San Diego.  The Shakerz would like to send a special thanks to Warrior/Brine, Adrenaline, and LacrosseUnlimited for all the support we received for Bump & Grind.

Lax often…
