Atlantic Sun Conference Offers Lacrosse In 2014

The Atlantic Sun Conference will play host to men’s lacrosse for the first time in 2014, and the conference will send an automatic qualifier to the NCAAS immediately. Needless to say, the teams slated to play in the Atlantic Sun Conference (Furman, High Point, Mercer, Jacksonville, VMI, and Richmond) must be excited!

The ASC will feature two brand new 2014 teams in its first year of existence, in Furman and Richmond. The conference will also feature three relatively new teams in Jacksonville (2010), Mercer (2011) and High Point (2013). The only established program is VMI, but six teams qualifies a conference for an AQ application, so the ASun champ should be dancing regardless, as long as their application is accepted.

For ALL six schools, the AQ is a huge boon. Not only does it mean that one of them is almost assured of an NCAA bid each year, but it also helps with recruiting overall. Making the NCAAs as an Independent (like Hopkins) is tough. It’s a serious uphill climb. But winning a new conference? Well that’s much more doable. Expect kids who want to make the NCAAs at some point in their college careers to realize this.
