Austria Abroad: Lessons Learned

Editor’s Note: Sean Delamer has traveled to the 2014 World Lacrosse Championships in Denver, CO, with the Austrian Men’s Lacrosse Team. Let Sean fill you in on the the current status of the Austrians.

After two days of competition here at the FIL World Lacrosse Championships the Austrian National Men’s Lacrosse team finds itself in a tight spot. They lost their opening game in a double-overtime heartbreaker to Hong Kong in a fast-paced high scoring game, managing to slip 13 goals past the Austrian net-minders to thwart the best efforts of Klaus Hauer and Alex Ball, who scored a whopping 5 goals each, and Gabriel “Gabi” Wagner who tallied an additional 2 scores to top off an impressive 12-goal performance.

Austria-4

On the second day of competition the Austrian’s squared off against a dominant German squad. From the first whistle the Germans proved that they are every bit as good as the team that played in the Blue Group in 2010 at the Manchester FIL World Lacrosse Championships.

It was a rough game for the Austrian Men, but through it all they held together as a team and never gave up. The German onslaught culminated in a 20-2 loss for Austria with bright spots coming in the form of goals by Valentin “Tino” Bombosch and Klaus Hauer as well as impressive goaltending from both keepers, Philipp “Holzie” Holzmüller and Christoph “Kuni” Kunert.

The third day of competition will see the Austrians take on the Belgians in a must-win high-pressure game. The Austrian players are focused and determined to grab a win in what should be an exciting matchup.

Off the field the team is enjoying its time in the States and at the University of Denver where they have had the chance to meet other players from all over the world and exchange lacrosse stories and knowledge, whether during lunch or any one of the many informal shoot-arounds on the DU fields.

As the Austrians hope to improve their record under Head Coach Christian Arnold their strongest feature is their unity and support for one another. Even in the toughest of times they give their all for them men next to them and represent their country with class and composure.
