First 2014 Tewaaraton Watch List Announced

The first Tewaaraton Watch List has been announced for 2014 by the Tewaaraton Foundation. The event was held at the Union Club in New York City last night, and members from across the lacrosse community attended the event. Long early-season lists were released, but these lists are far from final, as additional players will be named on March 25th, and April 10th.

On the men’s side, Tommy Schreiber and Lyle Thompson were named to the watch list, and both were finalists for last year’s award. Miles and Ty Thompson join Lyle on the list, giving Albany three players to watch, and certain teams had even more. Virginia had four guys on the list (Cockerton, Emery, LaPierre, and McWilliams), and so does Syracuse (Staats, Donahue, Rice, Harris). Only three non-D1 players were named to the watch list, but Brian Cannon (Dickinson D3), Andrew Wagner (Mercyhurst D2), and Joe Slavik (Cortland D3) represent the lower NCAA divisions well.

Lehigh sent us a photo of their two watch list players, goalie Matt Poillon and defenseman Ty Souders, so we’re happy to show those guys off as well. Poillon was named to the watch list last year. The Mountain Hawks have a tough D, and while it’s historically unlikely that a defensive player will win it, I like to think that players on that end of the field have a shot!

Over on the women’s side, Alyssa Murray returns as a 2013 finalist, and early favorite for the 2014 award. There is a lot of competition for the trophy though, and a number of teams have players who got nominated. If Wells Stanwick wins the award and Covie Stanwick wins the women’s award, we would have a brother-sister combo for the first time, which would be interesting.

After last year, a lot of people thought Lyle Thompson would walk away with the award on the men’s side for 2014, but so far things are looking super competitive for the trophy. Big names are putting up big points, and even more importantly, helping their team win games. When James Pannell doesn’t even make an early watch list you know it’s tight!

Keep your eyes on the players list out below, and keep your eyes peeled for guys who might make a run… it should be another crazy year for the best award in the college game!
