Loyola Tops Bellarmine 8-6: Photos And Video

Loyola opened up the ECAC portion of their schedule in Baltimore this weekend taking down Bellarmine 8-6. Jack Runkel started this game hot, and made 11 saves overall to lead the Greyhounds. Just when I start to think there is a goalie controversy at LC (with freshman Jimmy Joe Granito), Runkel plays one of his best games. It’s a positive. Two good goalies are better than one, or none!

The first quarter was tight, and ended up 1-1. Loyola used a 4-1 2nd quarter to take a 5-2 lead into the half. Bellarmine fought back hard, especially in the fourth quarter, when they outscored Loyola 3-1, but it wasn’t enough and the Hounds held on for their first ECAC win of the year.

Mike Sawyer had 3 goals and Justin Ward went 2-1 for 3 points. Nikko Pontrello, Sean O’Sullivan, and Chris Layne each had a goal of their own. Pontrello added an assist and Davis Butts also had a helper, to round out Loyola’s scoring. Bellarmine was led by Michael Ward and Karsen Leung, who had three goals and three assists, respectively. Will Cary had two goals, Lance Robinson scored a goal, and Cameron Gardner had an assist.

Bellarmine also got exceptional play out of their goalie, Dillon Ward, who made 16 saves, with twelve of them coming in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. Loyola outshot Bellarmine 46-25, and had four less turnovers in the game. Ground balls were just about even, and both teams cleared the ball extremely well. Face offs were also even, as both teams won 8 each, and Bellarmine was tough on man up, going 2-3, while Loyola didn’t convert on any of their three extra-man opportunities.

Loyola is now 4-1, and they take on Duke, on the road, on March 8th. Bellarmine is 3-1, and hosts Detroit for their next contest on March 5th.
