Stew Kerns is Huskies’ New Head Coach

The University of Washington Huskies have named Stew Kerns their new head coach for the 2009 season. Washington (7-6 in 2008) is an MCLA Division 1 team and a member of the Pacific Northwest Collegiate Lacrosse League. Kerns will be replacing former head coach Fred Wilmot, who stepped down last summer after helping rebuild the program and leading the Huskies to their most successful season in 4 years. The Huskies made it to the PNCLL Semi-Finals last season, falling to Simon Fraser University who went on to win the Title game.

According to Walax.com, Kerns most recently coached the Seattle Starz high school team and also held a coaching position at Washington lacrosse powerhouse Mercer Island High School.  He will make his college head coaching debut in Seattle against Chico State on February 6th.

Walax: What are some of the potential challenges you see as a new coach?
Some of the challenges as a new coach are understanding the team mentality, gaining trust, and creating the right expectations.

Walax: What things you are looking forward to as new coach?
Getting to know a great group of players and the challenge of success

Walax: What is different about coaching college club versus High school or Club?
The different responsibilities that college student athletes must manage, foremost being academics.

Walax: What challenges do you see for the program?
Creating a successful change management system for the team creating a lacrosse culture at the University of Washington.

2012 Update:

After taking over the Huskies in 2008, Head Coach Kerns has led the team to three post-season appearances, and ranked 20th of 90+ MCLA Division-I teams, bringing them back to national recognition once again. After 2012 season finished, Huskies’ Head Coach Stew Kerns stepped down and his Assistant, Jack Cerchiara took over.
