Throwback Thursday: 2001 MLL Semifinal

Welcome to Throwback Thursday! The year is 2001, and Major League Lacrosse has just completed their first season of real play. Long Island took down Rochester in the first semifinal, and now the Boston Cannons are taking on the Baltimore (now Chesapeake) Bayhawks!

David Evans was the big gun for Boston, but guys like Scott Doyle, Grer Traynor, Mike Battista, Billy Daye, Tim Whiteley, Ryan Curtis, Dan Radebaugh, Michael Watson ,and David Jenkins weren’t exactly slouches! This was a great team, and they went 3-10 in the regular season!

10-4 Baltimore was led by Mark Millon and Tom Marachek at attack. They might have been the deadliest duo in the league at the time. Paul Cantabene was still tearing it up, and winning a prodigious amount of face offs. Guys like Greg McAvera, Greg Cattrano, Rob Doerr, Brian Reese, Kip Fulks, and Dan Denihan gave the Bayhawks plenty more talent and name recognition.

Quint Kessenich was on the call, and he looks VERY different nowadays. Bring back the mop top, Quint!

This one ended up being a one goal game, with the Bayhawks winning 12-11. Boston almost gets one in right at the end though, and Jake Steinfeld even hops into the booth. Not too shabby! Dudley Dixon got the game winner for Baltimore, and Greg Cattrano was named the game MVP.

As usual, we’re getting this killer old school lacrosse video from Lax School. Check them out on YouTube!
