Tracey, to address this issue all parents have to do is show up with a form to have the coach sign indicating that he will return the parents hard-earned money if Junior does not get an athletic scholarship greater than the costs associated with joining the elite team or attending the camp. Basically, ask or better yet demand for a money back guarantee! You wont get one, that ought to get the gears grinding in mom/dad’s head about what is going on.

I have no issue with camps or summer travel teams or recruiting tournaments as long as they are forthright and mom, dad and the player approach these properly. If you want to play against better competition, see where you are at talent-wise, get potentially some better coaching, maybe get “seen” a good camp, travel team, tournament MAY be a good step.

I worked a camp last summer and a young man attended that had all the elite team gear, newest accessories, etc, etc, etc and would brag about he being on a certain elite team. Finally, I had enough and basically told him “son, you are on the team because mommy and daddy paid the fee. ANYONE can get on the team if they pay the money.”

That pretty much took care of this for the week!

Great article . . . I think you should do a follow up on how players and parents are tricked into thinking if they spend thousands of $ on camps, elite teams, and such, it will come back to them in the way of scholarships $ . . . There are way too many coaches taking advantage of families who blindly follow what they are told . . .
