Separate The Music From The Message

GREAT Monday morning, ladies and gentlemen!

Each and every one of us has heard a song or two and wondered why anyone would think it’s good music. And we’ve probably already convinced ourselves that it’s actually not good music. We look at certain people listening and singing along to the songs and wonder if they have any clue as to the meanings, relevance, or impact of the things that they are repeating. I’ve been asked. I’ve wondered. And the thought that always comes to mind is an interview with a former NFL running back that I watched long ago. He quoted his mother, saying that she always told him he had to be able to, “You have to be able to separate the music from the message.” That has stuck with me for nearly 15 years.

You have to be able to separate the music from the message

It’s a very powerful and – when applied to everyday life – productive manner of approaching things. The “music” and the message are two very different things, regardless of whether we are talking music, television, politics, discussion with friends or co-workers, employer/employee, coach/player, or teacher/student relationships.  The “music” is the noise. It’s the energy. It’s the intrigue. And sometimes it’s even the distraction. The music is the vessel in which the message is carried. The message it was lies behind the music. It’s what we are left with when the music is gone. It’s important, however, to know our purpose when we are interacting with people, listening to songs, watching TV or movies. Are we in it for the music? Or are we in it for the message? And we cannot let one, distract us from the other, or we will miss out on fulfilling the mission.

Make it a GREAT week!

Stay blessed.
