Alphabetical 2013 NCAA D1 Preview: Georgetown

We’re breaking down all the NCAA D1 teams one by one. Welcome to the Alphabetical 2013 NCAA D1 Previews! We are now at teams starting with the letter ‘G’ (there is only one!) and Georgetown, located in Washington, D.C., is up for Preview!

Maryland Terps v Georgetown Hoyas

In 2012, the Hoyas went 7-6 under Dave Urick, in his last year at the helm of the program. The season started well for Georgetown after a tough loss to Maryland, and the Hoyas racked up four straight wins, three of them by one goal each. The Hoyas then went on a 1-5 skid, where they played four top 20 games, and lost each of them. A 10-8 win over Cuse, and a 13-8 win over Rutgers put Gtown above .500 in Urick’s last year, and was a fitting way for the man to go out after doing so much for the program.

2013 sees Kevin Warne take over as Head Coach, and Georgetown has pretty much duplicated their 2012 schedule, while adding Navy, Marquette, and Dartmouth to their out of conference slate. It’s a tough schedule, but with the Hoyas’ close games in 2012, there are a lot of winnable games, many of which could help Gtown compete for an at-large bid to the NCAAs.

Zach Angel’s 23 points are gone, but Dan McKinney’s 20 and Zach Guy’s 29 both return. Brian Casey, Travis Comeau, and Jason McFadden are all back as well, and the Gtown offense should have some life left over from last year. Large freshman and sophomore classes of midfielders could provide an instant boost.

Defensively, Georgetown graduated their two major goalies in Matt Winter and CT Fisher. Jack Haley and Trever Siebert both return, and they are joined by freshmen Alex Joyce and Alex Vicas. One of these guys is going to need to step up and fill a serious hole. Brennan Bickenese, Patrick Murray, Chris Nourse, and others return on D, so that will help. Chris May can also help by winning face offs, which he did consistently last year when given a chance.

Kevin Warne will clearly bring a new attitude to Georgetown Lacrosse, and his not opening a bare cupboard by any means. However, with a tough schedule, and with a need in goal, I don’t see 2013 being a huge breakout season for the Hoyas. If they can go two or three games above .500 though, it will be a big step in the right direction.
