Mythbusters: Lacrosse Edition

Is a traditional lacrosse pocket heavier than a mesh pocket?

At the bottom of one of 412’s recent posts, he pondered why I would put a “heavy” traditional pocket in the “lightest head ever made”, the original Gait Torque.  This intrigued me.  Is traditional really that much heavier than mesh?  So much so that we would actually notice?  Since the Gait Torgue is so light (4.9 oz), if there were any stick where the difference could be felt, this would be it.

Personally, I couldn’t really feel a difference.  I have one strung with mesh and one with traditional and they felt the same to me.  So I decided to dig deeper and actually weight the materials from both a mesh and traditional pocket.  I thought the traditional might be a little heavier, maybe by a half ounce at most.

One man, two cups.

So I put the materials (unused so no dirt or debris is messing with the weight) into two separate, identical plastic cups and then weighed them both.  The results may just surprise you!

Mesh stringing materials weight
The mesh weighed in at 2.78 ounces.
traditional stringing materials weight
The traditional was only 2.44 ounces!

So when 412 asked why I would put a heavy pocket in a light stick, he was mistaken.  I actually put a light pocket in a light stick.  Hey, it happens to the best of us.

Now you know, and knowing is half the battle.
