Throwback Thursday: USA Vs Canada 1998

In honor of Canada naming their 24-man roster, we’re showing off what many people believe to be the greatest lacrosse game of all-time: USA vs Canada in 1998. Both the US and Canada were absolutely loaded with talent. You shouldn’t need me to tell you who was playing, but just in case you don’t know already, here are just a few of the guys playing:

Canada – Gary Gait, Paul Gait, Chris Gill, Steve Govett, John Grant Jr, Fred Jenner, Tom Marachek, Randy Mearns, Tom Phair, Chris Sanderson, Matt Shearer, Dan Stroup, Rodney Tapp, John Tavares, Steve Toll, and Jim Veltman, amongst others.

USA – Sal LoCasio, Brian Dougherty, Bill Miller, Michael Watson, Mark Millon, Darren Lowe, Jesse Hubbard, Casey Powell, Kevin Finneran, David Curry, Rob Shek, Greg Traynor, Charlie Lockwood, Tim Soudan, Ryan Wade, Brian Voelker, Joe Breschi, Pat McCabe, Reid Jackson, and John DeTommaso, amongst others.

That is an INSANE collection of a talent, and a veritable who’s who of lacrosse in the 1990s.

The US won the game and by the looks of things early on, it should have been an easy win. The US went up 11-1, and in the third this thing looked over. Canada stormed back though, and outscored the US 9-2, to inch closer and close. With the score at 13-10, Canada pumped in three goals to send the game to OT. Few could believe the Canadians had come back as they had, even with all the talent on their roster. It was improbable and shocking, and part of what made this game so great.

Neither team recorded a goal in the first OT period (which was not sudden death at the time), and the US outscored Canada 2-1 in the second OT to win the game 15-14. I really don’t think it gets any better than USA vs Canada!
