For those that don’t know, Canada has a pretty cool award known as the Lou Marsh Trophy that is awarded to Canada’s top athlete as voted on by a panel of sports enthusiasts.

Six Nations star and 3-time NLL Champion’s Cup winner Johnny Powless was named among the finalists for the 2014 award. Although Powless was recenty traded to Vancouver in the off-season, he has won 3 consecutive NLL Championships with the Rochester Knighthawks in his only 3 seasons in the NLL. Johnny was honored with the NLL’s Sportsmanship Award in his rookie season in the league.

In 2014, Powless also won a Minto Cup, leading the Six Nations Arrows before joining the Six Nations Chiefs a few weeks later to capture the 2014 Mann Cup. Yes, you read that right, this 21 year old won all three of box lacrosse’s most prestigious championships all in one calendar year.

It was gold medalist and 2-time World Cup champion bobsledder Kaillie Humphries (age 29) who became this year’s recipient. Although the Calgary-raised Humphries took home the honors this year, it is still an incredible honor for a lacrosse player to earn a nomination alongside Olympians, international tennis stars and a NHL player.

The award is named after Toronto Star sports editor Lou Marsh and was won last year by the Calgary Stampeders running back, Jon Cornish. The trophy has still yet to be won by a lacrosse player in its 71 celebrations.

These highlights seem to have made his case…
