Take a look at the NCAA bracket this year, There’s a reason 4 ACC teams made it into to the playoffs, and that 16-0 UMASS drew a 6 seed and was knocked out in the first round.

It’s hard to deny any team from the playoffs thats 16-2… you can make that same argument for Beckman or Esperanza. Not taking anything away from them… Just believe they should have been given a chance to prove themselves. How will we ever truly know they are what you say they are without being given a proper chance.

Fair enough… but how will we ever truly know that without them being given a fair chance? Ask any low seed NCAA basketball tourney team… Upset can and will happen!

makes complete sense – college football and basketball are testaments to the iron-clad logic of rating teams based on strength of schedule and conference ranking.

well, of course if you excuse the multitude of upsets that happen in both the BCS and March Madness every single year. which does lend a strong vote of support to simply awarding teams who pull it together with the schedule they have and win.

sad situation. a system that relies on power ranking teams is broken. not to say Laguna was the most quality 16-2 team, but a team that wins deserves a chance to continue winning. that is what sport is all about.

Looking at their schedule, they played 2 teams with winning records. One of which was a fairly new program in Yorba Linda and the other vs JSerra they lost. Its easy to get a good record but if you dont play anyone significant thats not fair to other teams. Laguna shouldve been kept out of the playoffs.

The “4 teams this year that made the playoffs last year” statement is not relevant at all. Considering that all of those teams (excluding J.Serra who lost in the first round) were from the Division 2 bracket. They played scrubs all year long and lost to the two decent teams they played. Ont top of this, The Sea View League and South Coast Leagues went under a reconstruction 2 years ago where the top tiered teams were placed in the South Coast League, and the lower tiered teams in the Sea View League. The top 3 or even 4 South Coast League teams could have on the Sea View easily.

My fellow coach is on the Committee and i heard the arguments for them being excluded from the playoffs. The Primary reason is that they played starter programs no real good solid programs, the coach knowingly planned to play these losing teams to come out with an incredible 16-2. If they played the teams we played which included HB Los Al CDM st. Margarets tesoro great oak. then maybe they may have been included. It is the quality of teams they played against, the level of Laguna Hill’s play did not match their record.

If the conference is split then the North winner should play the South winner on the last week of the regular season to decide who gets the AQ. That gives both of them a chance to earn their spot in the playoffs.

Ask any NCAA DII team that was on the bubble of making the playoffs over the past decade. Specifically the 2011 LeMoyne squad about “Overall body of work” or to the 2010 Mercyhurst squad. I feel bad for the coaches and kids on this Laguna team. Stormy is right though these kids should be allowed to play. The committee should even maybe even consider having a play-in game for the 16th spot.

Great article! Im familiar with the situation and have a few short things to add… Laguna played 4 teams this year that made the playoffs last year… Those teams did not do as well this year and they’re the ones that were punished for it. Secondly their “goal differential vs common opponents” well in 85% of these common opponent games, lagunas goal differential was higher, if not matched in all games. On a much smaller level it does look like a BCS argument… I suggest they abolish the “committee” and find some sort of alternative in the selection process. Guarantee all conference opponents a bid. I know they were the only conference with no representation in the playoffs… What a shame!

Why cant they do what other states do? everyone with a record of .500 or more makes the playoffs. If NJ can do it with so many teams i’m sure CA could do the same.

I mean i dont know what the CA rules are but unless those are shooting shirts maybe thats why they are out, NY has strict uni rules and those are not 90% home/away color lol

all jokes aside though, every league should get a representative in the playoffs, if they won theirs put them in, if you think their schedule was that weak make them the 16 seed
