The NYC Report: PSAL Lacrosse Season!

Editor’s Note: Welcome to the New York City Report, brought to you by Apple Lacrosse, NYC’s first lacrosse store! This week Billy Nguyen dives deep into the world of Public School lacrosse and introduces us to some of the teams in the PSAL for 2014.

I am excited to bring LAS an exciting year of updates and coverage on all things NYC lacrosse. I will being making an effort this spring to focus  mainly on PSAL high school lacrosse. To kick things off; this past weekend, I traveled to Randall’s Island in Manhattan to watch 50 boys and girls public school teams scrimmage each other (supported by CityLax).

PSAL Scrimmage Day Video

We followed around Eagle Academy (a first year PSAL varsity team) for their first PSAL scrimmage day. We have film from Eagle’s scrimmages against James Madison, Hunter, and Herbert Lehman High Schools. Enjoy!

Game Of The Week

My game of the week was an OT thriller, FDA traveled up to the Bronx yesterday to take on Lehman. Final score was 9-8 in OT and the stars came to play.

2014 Season Preview – “A” North

The PSAL boys varsity lacrosse teams are currently divided into 3 divisions, Champion (North and South), Bowl, and Developmental. All teams have a chance of bumping up and down pending league standings at the end of each season. Today, I will be breaking down the Championship North Division.

Frederick Douglas Academy

Coached by Jacqueline Ronchetti and former Midwood player Richardson Louis, the Lions are currently 1-0 on the season with a huge win in OT over Lehman yesterday. FDA returns some serious firepower led by Raheem King, Uchenna Akusobi and Kenneth Davis. Look for these 3 seniors to lead the team and rack up some serious numbers this spring. This team practices on the parking lot at the school, they’re not afraid of concrete, watch out when the ball is on the ground. In other news, team captain Josiah Bramble will be headed to Ithaca College in the fall!

Benjamin N. Cardozo

Head coach Chris Milani and the Judges have been knocking on the doorstep for the last couple of years with impressive regular seasons. Can they get the job done in the post-season this year? Vincent Liu put up 48 goals last year but he graduated. The team will look to get points from Amit Ramsaaran and Ryan Mook. The judges have 18 players on the roster as of today. Who will step up?

Hunter College High School

Head coach Johnson Wong and the Hawks are still riding high from last seasons thrilling championship game beating Totenville 10-9. Hunter graduates star player Oliver Yu but is looking at Cameron Scott, Duffy Collins, and Jeffers Guthrie to control the tempo this year. In net will be Sophomore, Chris Moy. Hunter has a lot of rebuilding to do after graduating a strong senior class. There are no seniors on the current roster, will they wait until next year to make a big run or can this young group make a big push and shock the Championship division.

Long Island City

I will be completely honest here and flat out say that I don’t know much about this team… but I’m looking forward to learning more about them this year! LIC has always been one of those teams that are quietly good. They have some serious potential to make some noise this year in the strong Championship division this season. They are well balanced but no players really stick out. They lost a handful of close games last year and if they can pull those out this year, we are in for some upsets. I hope to get to know them better this year. Go Bulldogs!

Herbert H. Lehman

This has to be the year for the Lions, coach Straw has a senior heavy class that looked strong at the PSAL pre-season scrimmage. They showed a diverse skill set and proved that they can play physical defense while controlling the tempo on offense. Lehman will look to Philip Nguyen to quarterback the offense and Michael Aguilera to shoot lights out. If they can figure it out on defense, watch out! (Author’s Note: I will try not to be biased, but you should know that Phil Nguyen is my little brother. Honesty first!)

My team to watch in 2014 will be Frederick Douglas Academy and my player to watch is Uchenna Akusoba (of FDA). This guy uses a traditional, c’mon!

Championship South boys preview next week, as well as photos, some video, and recap from the game of the week!
