I was talking with my friend, Malcolm Chase, the other day and he filled me in on a new lacrosse event he has going in Maine that seems interesting, and I think it could be really good for the growth of the game in the state. Basically, the event is a two-day tournament on December 27th and 28th where local high school teams can enter. Each team is guaranteed 4 games and the top teams participate in a playoff and the games are played indoors in a climate controlled facility.
Right now you’re probably asking yourself, “so what is original about this?” and the answer is that each of these teams will be coached by recent graduates of their school who are now playing in college, and not their regular coaches. What’s great about this set up in particular is that it gives current players the chance to connect with alumni, and keeps alumni involved in their communities and programs when they come home from college during breaks. It also lets the kids play out of season together without having to worry about what the Head Coach thinks. Basically, it’s a great chance to get out and play, have some fun, and further stoke some Maine lacrosse rivalries for the spring.
Jeremy Thompson will also be there and with the help of Lyle and Miles Thompson along with the rest of the MPL staff, the players in attendance will also have a couple of skill sessions and clinic type settings. Always good to learn from the Thompsons. These guys are wizards with the stick and know the game intimately. Longpoles will benefit from instruction by Chase and others, and everyone will get a lot of lax in. Throw in a sweet swag bag and the MPL Indoor Classic is THE event to hit in Maine this winter. Maybe you’ll even get some LAS swag in there!
We’ll have more on the MPL Indoor Classic in the coming weeks!
