Major League Lacrosse Weekly Recap

Week 3 of the 2012 Major League Lacrosse season is in the books, and we have four games to discuss and predictions to verify.  I was six for six with my MLL predictions entering last weekend, so let’s see if I was able to keep that streak going, and see who is looking like a contender early on, and who has serious work to do!

I called the Boston Cannons – Hamilton Nationals game to perfection.  I said the Nats would put up between 9 and 12 goals and they put up nine.  I had Boston going for at least 16 at home and they put up 18, doubling the Nationals up and notching another convincing win.  The Cannons definitely look like the defending champs, and only a complete team playing  complete game will be able to knock them off.

Boston was up 8-5 at the half, and the teams traded 3 goals each in the third.  In the fourth quarter Boston took over and made the difference with a 7-1 final quarter.  Down 3 to Boston is tough but manageable.  But when the Cannons make a run, every team needs to be ready to respond, and with vigor.

I predicted the Charlotte Hounds would beat the Ohio Machine 15-13, or something along those lines, but it was actually 18-15 in the end, with Charlotte still winning.  I’d say that’s close enough to count as a good prediction.

Both of these teams have talent, and could steal some games here and there, but both need to be reinforced and build chemistry before they can truly compete with the best the MLL has to offer.  I like the direction both teams have gone though, and they are playing exciting lacrosse that is sure to draw in the fans.  If you’re in Ohio or North Carolina make sure to go to a game this Summer.  I think you’ll be impressed!

I predicted the Chespeake Bayhawks would win by 4+ goals at home over the Rochester Rattlers, but I should have had that score reversed, as Rochester came into town and shut down Chesepeake’s offense, heading back upstate with a 12-8 win.  This is an impressive win for Rochester, and it signals that this team is a far cry from last year’s “almost there” team.  Rochester is to be taken very seriously.  The Rattlers are responsible for my first wrong pick of the season.  I’d love to be pissed at them, but they’re a good bunch of guys, so I’ll let it slide.

Unfortunately, there are no Rochester – Chesepeake highlights yet.  I’d include them otherwise.  I’m not that spiteful.

The last game of the weekend was the Long Island Lizards visiting the Denver Outlaws, and I thought LI would bring it here and make the game close, so I went with Denver, but only by 3 goals.  Well, the Outlaws had other ideas and won the game 19-11, but I picked the right winner.  That’s all I’m trying to do here.  The score predictions are just added fun.

So now I am 9 for 10 in my MLL predictions with pesky Rochester creating the only upset so far, at least in my mind.  I’ve spoken with a couple of people who have been to MLL games so far this year, and word on the street is that the level of play is as high as ever, and that teams are really starting to settle into their areas, at least for the most part.  The new franchises seem to be doing well both on and off the field, and the MLL seems as solid as it has ever been.  Not a bad start to the Summer!
