Music Monday: Rachel Cohen’s Art-Making Jams

I get to share a workspace with Rachel Cohen, my artist extraordinaire life partner, and by virtue of this shared space, I get to enjoy the musical stylings of what we like to call “Club Rachel”.  The girl just blasts dance/electronic/techno music as she produces her artwork, and I have to say, when I get vibing on it, my blog production definitely skyrockets.  So instead of offering up a Pro Lacrosse player’s top tracks, we’re going in the art direction.  Oh, and did I mention that we collaborate on artwork together sometimes?  Well, we do.  It’s lax art of course.  I just can’t get my mind working in another direction I guess.

She paints and sculpts and also produces prints using copper plates that have been treated with acid and other chemicals.  The details of the print are intriguing, and I always saw a scene unfold before my eyes.  So we thought it might be cool if I took my limited drawing skills to some of the prints, and I could try to bring the prints to life, as I saw them.  Now aside from a Drawing class at Wesleyan, the last serious art I tried to make was in AP Art back in High School.  So it’s a bit stunted and juvenile.  But I think that’s kind of an interesting contrast to the highly skilled and developed techniques used to create the prints.  Examining the print without regard to the line drawings can also be interesting to see how your reality of perception differs from that of the scribbler, in this case, me.
