Music Monday: Soul Brother #2

This week’s Music Monday focuses on an artist that is living in the shadows. Kendrick Lamar has virtually become a household name after the success of his highly acclaimed album good kid, m.A.A.d. city, and his now infamous “Control” verse. Kendrick, formerly known as K. Dot, is a member of Black Hippy, a group comprised of ScHoolboy Q, Jay Rock, and Ab-Soul, all of which are on the indie label Top Dawg Entertainment.  While many people are tuned into Kendrick, the talented Ab-Soul aka “The Black Lip Pastor” is easily overlooked.

Born Herbert Anthony Stevens IV, Ab-Soul grew up in a record store which helped influence his music.  His passion for music coupled with a curious mind was the recipe for his own music. Ab-Soul has an incredible thirst for knowledge and claims to read and listen to just about everything because he simply loves to learn. You’ll learn plenty from him if you give his music a listen. However, the road wasn’t always easy though as he was diagnosed with Stevens-Johnson Sydrome at age 10.  This disease may be rare but it’s a very serious one.  SJS resulted in the darkening of his lips and also increased his eye’s sensitivity to light.

Ab-Soul has an incredibly sharp mind and is quite versatile as he often sings the hooks on songs. Soul is just starting to get the attention he deserves as he was selected as a member of the 2013 XXL Freshman class and his music was also featured in Grand Theft Auto V.  But enough about the man, just enjoy his music and some tracks he’s featured on.
