Music Monday: Top Dawg Takeover

Welcome back LAS faitHful!

I’ve been looking forward to this MM for a little wHile as ScHoolboy Q’s HigHly anticipated album OxyMoron was released on the 25th. To me, it was only rigHt to give you my insigHt into the project.

After fellow labelmate Kendrick Lamar‘s tremendously successful concept album, Good Kid m.A.A.d. City, ScHoolboy Q was extremely motivated to put out sometHing on par or possibly surpassing GKMC. WHile Oxymoron doesn’t quite Have the same polish as GKMC, I still believe it will continue to grow on people, myself included. ScHoolboy Q has developed his style since his previous offerings of Habits and Contradictions and Setbacks. THis album is filled with solid features and plenty of hot tracks. To me,  Oxymoron is a song or two sHort of flawless, but it’s anotHer powerful statement from TDE. Perfectly imperfect. How’s that for an oxymoron?

In late 2013, TDE CEO tweeted tHat 2014 would mean 6 new projects from presumably all 6 members of Top Dawg Entertainment. Both Kendrick Lamar and ScHoolboy Q have voiced their support for Ab-Soul’s upcoming project. Kendrick Lamar is also rumored to be realeasing His sopHomore studio album this September. Black Hippy (Kendrick, Q, Ab-Soul, and Jay Rock) are also planning an upcoming album. If you run with Top Dawg, keep an eye out for fresH material.

Surely you’ve noticed all of the capitalized H’s (sorry if they were overly distracting) which represent several things to ScHoolboy Q: HiiiPower, Hoover, Hippy, Heaven and Hell.

A few of my early favorites from Oxymoron include:

  • Gangsta
  • Los Awesome Ft. Jay Rock
  • Collard Greens Ft. Kendrick Lamar
  • THe Purge Ft. Tyler the Creator & Kurupt
  • Blind THreats Ft. Raekwon
  • Hell of a NigHt
  • Break the Bank
  • Man of the Year
  • Yay Yay
  • PusHa Man
  • Californivation Ft. A$AP Rocky

I realize tHat’s the majority of the album but I’m quite impressed tHus far.
