NALL Recap: Boston Rockhoppers 20, Baltimore Bombers 9

After losing in OT the first time they faced the Baltimore Bombers, The Boston Rockhoppers made sure their latest game wasn’t so close, stepping over the Baltimore Bombers on their way to the top of the NALL standings with a 20-9 victory Sunday in Baltimore.

Boston’s 20 goals (Mike Stone scored seven himself) is now the (very young, I know) NALL’s new single-game record, and it’s the third time in four games that the Rockhopper defense has held an opponent to only 9 goals.

Mike Stone goes for 1 of his 7 goals.

The first half was consistently even; the teams consistently traded goals (and penalties – this thing got chippy, early) throughout, and the game was tied at seven at the half. Whatever Rockhoppers’ head coach Jack Piatelli said in the locker room at halftime must have worked, because Boston came out and scored eight unanswered goals in the third quarter.

Penalties were once again a huge problem for the Bombers, who had to attempt their comeback while serving 10-minute major misconduct and 5-minute high-sticking penalties from David Shortt and Ben Rubeor, respectively, in the fourth quarter. Baltimore definitely could have used Mike Simon’s defensive services, but he was busy going coast-to-coast and scoring goals for team USA.

Next Saturday the 3-1 Rockhoppers host the 0-2 Rhode Island Kingfish, while the 2-1 Bombers head to Kentucky for Friday and Sunday games against recently signed Chazz Woodson and the 1-2 Stickhorses. The beauty of a small upstart league is that Boston and Baltimore won’t have to wait long for their head-to-head tiebreaker: the teams meet again in Baltimore on Feb. 17th.

If you’re in the area for any NALL game, I recommend going… if you can find a ticket. These games are selling out more and more.
