Weekend Recap & Lacrosse Video Explosion

What a weekend of lacrosse! We saw some crazy upsets, some not so crazy upsets, and a ton of amazing college lacrosse action. Let’s run down ALL the weekend’s big time scores and reports, and we’ll provide video wherever possible!

NCAA D1 – Round of 16

On Saturday, we started the weekend off with Albany knocking off the #3 seed, Loyola, 13-6. The Thompsons were on fire, and Albany’s D stood tall all day long. On Saturday, Albany was the team many of us thought they could be. We have much more on that game (including great photos), here. Notre Dame destroyed Harvard, 13-5, and while the score was similar to the Albany game, Notre Dame looked even more dominant. They pressed out on D, and played higher level lacrosse. ND looks like a true contender right now.

Maryland taking down Cornell 8-7 in the last seconds was thrilling. It looked like the Ivy was going to pull off a big win, but that didn’t happen, and Ivy teams went 0-3 on the day. Mike Chanechuk got free late, and made the Big Red pay. The goal was assisted by a Cornell to Maryland transfer. Guess that one paid off. Denver stopped the ACC run of wins by knocking off UNC 9-5 in Colorado. Denver did a great job of committing to slides on Joey Sankey, and their offense was patient and played tough, even when UNC stepped up the physicality.

On Sunday, Johns Hopkins took down Virginia, 14-8, and looked great doing so. Hop played good team D, focused on shooters, and played dynamically on offense for much of the contest. Hop was, and still is, my dark horse to win it all. The Jays so seem to be peaking at the right time. Duke dominated Air Force, 20-9, and while the Falcons fought hard all game, this one was really all Duke. The Blue Devils looked dominant at times.

Drexel topped Penn 16-11, and the Dragons are another squad that looks to be peaking at the right time. Penn likes to win games ugly, but Drexel stuck to their plan, and never stopped scoring, coming back from an early deficit. Nicky Saputo was dynamite taking face offs and scoring goals. In the final game of the weekend for D1, Bryant beat Syracuse in one of the biggest upsets of all-time. Yes, Bryant is good, and has a great face off guy, but Cuse doesn’t lose in the Dome, and they were the #2 seed. It was a rematch of last year, but in 2014, it came out Bryant. Their keeper was unreal, and won the game for the Bulldogs at the end.

NJCAA – Final Four & Finals

Both Onondaga and Nassau had relatively easy semifinal games, as OCC won their game 19-4 over Anne Arundel, and NCC beat CCBC Essex 17-7 to win their semifinal. The final saw a tight game, especially early, and it was much close than the final 12-7 score indicates. It was 8-6 late in the third before OCC put some real distance between themselves and Nassau.

Nassau won a ton of face offs, and both goalies played incredibly well. In the end, OCC’s defense was able to spark some excellent transition, and their offense canned a couple of big shots, when the Lazers needed them most. This was a competitive game, and Nassau was in it until late.

NCAA D2 – Elite 8

Adelphi took down Dowling 8-7 in a tight battle for a Final Four spot. These two Long Island schools went at it, and Adelphi eked out the win. LIU CW Post defeated Le Moyne 9-3 in a hard fought New York game.

Limestone had the biggest margin of victory, 17-6 over Queens, and Tampa secured the upset win of the tourney with an 11-9 win over visiting Mercyhurst. HUGE win for Tampa!

NCAA D3 – SO MANY GAMES!

Cortland takes down Springfield 14-10 at home. SC is a good team, and this is a solid win.

Denison beat Aurora 11-8, and this game was tight though out much of the contest, even with the 3 goal win. RIT used transition goals to defeat Ithaca by a good margin, 20-8. They really are automatic in odd man situations.

Salisbury doubled up York, 12-6, in a pretty regulated game. SU was in control and didn’t let go. Stevenson weathered the Carbini storm, and won 15-9 in a night game. Tufts and Endicott got into a serious fist fight (metaphorically speaking), and Tufts pulled out a very tight 10-9 game. That was a good one!

Union knocked off a pesky Amherst squad 17-11. Union looked better, but the ‘Herst never went away. WAC defeated visiting Lynchburg 10-7, and the Shoremen are moving on to the Elite 8.

We will get to NLL and MLL recaps later this week, once those writers have a chance to get their brains together. It was a rough weekend for all of us in the media. There was simply too much to see and do! But that also made it awesome!
