Fireside Chat With Catholic University Head Coach Brooks Singer

catholic university lax

The latest installment of the Fireside Chat series brings Brooks Singer, Head Coach of the Catholic University of America Cardinals, to The Villa for a chat about what it’s like to be a grown up in the lacrosse world.

Caoch Singer

Coach Singer

There are two reasons Brooks is not your ordinary lacrosse coach. First, on top of running the Cardinal program, he has a day job as Senior Investigator for the U.S. Department of Justice, a demanding job in and of itself. Second, he played his college ball for the Laxcats out at the University of Arizona for our favorite cowboy boot wearin’ Coach Mickey Miles Felton (seen here rocking a sweet ride and his favorite kicks). So saddle up and see how one of the busiest guys in the game became one of the first club players to man the helm of an NCAA squad.

LAS: Your biography says that not only are you the head coach, but you also work in the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice. Can you give us a peek into one of your days during the spring season? How do you manage to juggle both your job at the DOJ and being a head lacrosse coach?

Singer: Hectic would be one word to describe it, however some would call it managed chaos.  A day consists of handling the daily tasks required for my duties at the Department of Justice (DOJ), as well as those required for overseeing Catholic University’s (CUA) Men’s Lacrosse program.  After a day at the office at DOJ, I head over to CUA for practice.  We never practice before 6pm on weekdays since we have such a wide array of majors represented on the team, and we need to do this in order to avoid any academic conflicts.  My assistant coaches, who I rely on greatly and who are a tremendous asset to our program, also have day jobs, so it works out well for everyone involved with the program.  There are some days when I do not have a minute to spare, and being able to take a few minutes for lunch often becomes a luxury.  Managing my time, being task-oriented, working to complete projects to achieve goals, and prioritizing, all things that we as coaches preach to our players, are how I handle the many responsibilities I have in both of my roles at DOJ and CUA.

It’s a dream of many lacrosse players to have an awesome job and still have a substantial amount of involvement in the sport. How did your pursuit of both come about?

CUA gets ready for 2010

CUA gets ready for 2010

The priority for me was to obtain a higher education, attending law school and receiving a Masters degree, in order to establish a career to support myself.  At the same time, I worked to establish a balance in life to be able to spend time with family and friends, work on hobbies, and enjoy things that I am passionate about like the sport of lacrosse.  I started out playing and coaching lacrosse after college, but realized after some time that I truly enjoyed everything involved with coaching the game and managing a program.

Are there any skills you’ve carried over from your playing days that you’ve incorporated into your professional career?

In every line of work these days, you hear the importance of being a part of a team, and all that goes with that in terms of being a productive and positive member of the team, and working towards achieving the goals set for the team.  I believe that those who have participated in team sports, especially the high intensity sports such as lacrosse, have a true leg up on everyone who has not.  It is easy for people in the workplace to talk about being a part of a team, but I know that those who have participated in sports truly appreciate everything that goes into that such as working towards a common goal, being unselfish, supporting one another, and staying positive.  Those are qualities I have sought to carried into my professional career, and I work at continuing to do so every day.

You played your college ball at Arizona for legendary coach Mickey Miles Felton. How hard was it for a guy with an MCLA (formerly USLIA) pedigree to break into the NCAA coaching ranks? Also, what was the craziest outfit you ever saw Mickey wear on the sidelines?

The MCLA, and formerly USILA, indeed play lacrosse at a very high level.  Many of my teammates were transfers from top NCAA schools, and we had lots of success against NCAA programs when we would play against them.

Our rival at the time was DIII Whittier College who was always ranked in the top 20, and one of my greatest memories was when we beat Whittier to end their record-setting winning streak at the time. Regardless of the school someone attends or the league they are in, we are all playing the greatest sport in the world at an extremely high level of play.  I had been coaching CUA’s club team before the decision was made to elevate men’s and women’s lacrosse to varsity status.  I was offered the position, and we are now going on our 10th year as a varsity program.  Watching our program grow has been the best part.  Seeing our players graduate and enjoy a successful life after college is the most rewarding.  Playing for Arizona under Mickey-Miles Felton taught me about being passionate for the game of lacrosse.  I value the lessons I have learned from him to this day.  I would say everyone enjoyed his custom multi-colored sneaker-boots.

What kind of stick are you currently using? Have you had a chance to see or talk to your players about how the new stick regulations are affecting their game?

I have been using an Evo Pro.  We have worked this fall to ensure that all of our players are using a compliant stick head according to NCAA rules.  I have spoken to players, coaches, referees, and others about the new stick head rules and new dimensions.  The consensus appears to be that there is not much affect on the game.  My biggest concern has been that we should be working to make the sport of lacrosse as inclusive a possible and given the state of the economy, to place another financial burden on schools or players is difficult to do.  I am also content with how the game is being played today, so I am an advocate for the least amount of rules changes possible.

The move to the Landmark Conference was a big one.  Are you excited or bummed to have SU/Stevenson off the schedule?  Do you think the Landmark can be nationally competitive in the short term? Long term?  Will the AQ help your recruiting efforts?

We are excited about the newly formed Landmark Conference.  We will miss playing teams from the Capital Athletic Conference, but are excited about the new teams we have picked up in the Landmark.  Having the Automatic Qualifier is a wonderful opportunity and will definitely help to establish the Landmark as one of the top conferences in Division III.  We were a couple of overtime loses away from being at the top of the Landmark this past season, so we are extremely excited about the upcoming season!

What are the team goals for 2010? Any personal goals?

Our team goal is to win the Landmark Conference Championship and move on the NCAA tournament this upcoming season!  My personal goals are to produce a championship team, while never compromising our academic standards, our team-first philosophy, and our emphasis on class and sportsmanship.  These are the things that will help to build our players into better people once they graduate.

What are your five favorite songs right now?

Tom Hanks = nap time.

Tom Hanks = nap time?

That is a funny question, guess I will go with some old and new school:

The Fixer – Pearl Jam

Empire State of Mind – Jay Z/Alicia Keys

Soul to Squeeze – Red Hot Chili Peppers

21 Guns-  Green Day

and My Hero -Foo Fighters

What’s your favorite movie for those long bus rides to away games?

Cast Away. Puts the guys to sleep like clockwork.

Thanks to Coach Singer for taking the time to talk to us and good luck to CUA in the spring!

Lax Link-O-Rama

Lax Link-o-rama

Brunelle and Craven here today. No one can wax poetic about the week of lacrosse in review like our guru Conner Wilson, but in this week’s Link-O-Rama we’re going to try our best.

On Wednesday we celebrated our men and women in uniform, and with that in mind we really liked this preview of the 2010 Army Black Knights courtesy of Inside Lacrosse.  The Black Knights will start the spring down in sunny Florida with exhibition games against the US National team and Duke followed by kicking off their 93rd season with a home game against VMI.

Jeffrey Long, Kevin Lowe, Mark Millon, and Todd Curry were the part of the 2009 class inducted into the US Lacrosse Hall Of Fame in a ceremony on November 7th. The ’09 HOF class was one of the youngest ever.

Classy suits, fellas!

On the coaching front, The Presbyterian College (South Carolina) athletics department has announced that Mike Gongas has been named acting head men’s lacrosse coach. The former New York Titan graduated from Adephi in 2007 had been serving as the interim head coach after Jason Childs left to become the first lacrosse coach at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia.

Stephen Berger is now working over at US Lacrosse. Congrats to that guy! Sounds like a good gig to lock in.

US Lacrosse gave the run down on the upcoming LXM Pro event in Orange County next Saturday. Akon is out, but…

Why is a video blog called a vlog? It just doesn’t sound right. “I’m gunna vlog that!” Anyway, the Brown lacrosse team vlogged on their trip to San Francisco to play UNC. Good stuff. And you know what’s even better? We’ve got an Fireside Chat with stud Brown player dropping next week. You can expect quite a bit of Brown Bears lax content on LAS throughout the season.

Speaking of Firesides, we had a few quality chats this week. Monday started off with the Chapman duo, Connor Martin and Andrew Clayton. 412 talked shop with Cal’s Connor Thomas on Tuesday. Simon Fraser’s Adam Foss spit game on LAS Wednesday. And finally, yesterday Wilson spoke with Certified Aussie and Maryland middie Adam Sear.

On the gear side of things, 412 gave us a lengthy list of sweet new glove mockups and sublimated pennies. Lacrosse Playground got a behind the scenes look at Team USA’s new cleats. And last but not least, we unveiled the Oregon Ducks’ new gloves.

Our buddies over at HomeField are in the running for NYC’s Top Video startup. You can help them win by voting.

HomeField also released a commercial this week:

Thought that was pretty funny? Us too. Good work guys.

This video, however, is pretty ridiculous if you ask us: How To Become a Pro Lacrosse Player in 5 Easy Steps. It’s just that easy. Even a dog can be a pro…

Fireside Chat With Adam Sear, University of Maryland

Adam Sear as a freshman against UMBC

Adam Sear as a freshman against UMBC

For this installment of the Fireside Chat series, LaxAllStars is talking with Adam Sear, a senior midfielder on the University of Maryland Men’s Lacrosse Team.  Adam came to Maryland via Perth, Australia where he was a dominant player at the highest club, state and national levels.

LAS: Who are some of your teammates we should watch out for this year?

Adam Sear: The roommate… Brian Phipps. He’s obviously coming of ACL surgery during the summer and is going through all the rehab to get back on the field. Expect him to come back in full form.

Also, our offense, including Ryan Young, Grant Catalino, Will Yeatman, and Travis Reed. They went from the “baby Terps” to All-Americans the very next year. I’m looking forward to hearing what name they [the fans] come up with this year for these guys.

Describe your pregame. What do you do to get ready for a big game?

I don’t really have a pregame ritual. Since an early age I always just showed up and played. Obviously for the big games the butterflies always play a part but I’m usually the one rocking out to the locker room music and just trying to lighten the mood.

Sear in action last year (2009)

Sear in action last year (2009)

What team are you looking forward to playing the most this year? Why?

Playing here at Maryland, there is never a shortage of big games but the one I am most looking forward to is the Day of Rivals game against Hopkins. If the rivalry isn’t enough,  I haven’t beaten them. Hopefully we can do it this year.

Where is your least favorite place to play a road game? Favorite?

Playing on the road is always a hurdle you need to get over but if I had to choose a favorite place to play it would be Homewood Field in Baltimore. The first lax I ever saw on TV was the 1998 World Cup at Homewood and it was surreal to run out on that field for MD.

When your team travels for road games, what is the transportation like? Lodging?

Travelling with the team is definitely not hard. I’m not sure if anyone has seen our UMD busses but they are fully customized down to the embroidery on the head rest, have direct satellite tv, reclining chairs, and a bathroom for those unexpected mishaps on the long road.

How do you feel your conference measures up to the other NCAA conferences?

I think the ACC levels up very well to other conferences in the NCAA. I think you can just look at the track record of the four teams and it speaks for itself. I consider myself very lucky to have played in such a competitive league with UNC, UVA, and Duke.

Sear looks to move the ball in an Alumni game...

Sear looks to move the ball in an Alumni game…

If you had to predict the mens’ NCAA title winners right now, who would they be?

Well its gotta be the Terps! and I think I’m gonna go with UVa (as the other finalist) to make it an all-ACC Championship game.

Anything about the new stick rules: Have you adjusted to the new heads? How do you think they will affect your game/the general play of lacrosse?

The new heads really haven’t been that much of a problem. Besides just tweaking out a couple of stringing problems they’re pretty much the same as the old ones.

What are your personal goals for 2010? What are the team goals for 2010?

In terms of personal goals I just want to help my team win a championship. I know its cliché  to put the team before self but its something I’ve always thought was right. For our team any season without a national championship is a failure.  Being at a school like Maryland really instills that in you, with its rich heritage. Also an ACC championship would be nice.

What is the team doing differently this fall/winter to achieve those goals?

This fall has been the hardest since I’ve been here in College Park. We went through a serious schedule of two-a-days and lifting which really took its toll on the body. In saying that, we got more done this fall than any other I’ve been around for. We’re at a good spot right now and the coaches are the ones to thank for that.

How close is UMD to going to the next level in the conference/nationally?

We’re on the doorstep…the last 3 yrs have been heartbreaking but I think this is the year. Our mindset and the way we do things around here has continued to improve so its going to be an exciting year!

Other than the Day of Rivals game against Hopkins, is there a game or road trip you are most excited about this spring?

MD Vs UVA 8pm Saturday April 3rd 2010. College Park, MD Nationally televised on ESPN2….enough said.

What are the biggest differences between lax in Perth and the US of A?

This question makes me laugh…I love the way we do things back home but its much more of a laid-back atmosphere in Aus. Here it is very professional and much more structured. Both ways have their pros and cons but it was definitely hard getting accustomed to the seriousness over here but I have definitely grown to really like it.

From hero to teammate. Rainey and Sear in action for Wembley LC in Perth, Australia.

What brought you stateside in the first place? And then what did you think of lacrosse, in general in the USA?

I wanted to play D1 lacrosse…its pretty simple. Growing up and playing in Aus the only real connection we have to the outside world is the internet. I grew up watching videos and just trying to learn as much as I could and this really got me into it.

Lacrosse in general in the US is great. Back home you’re lucky to find someone who actually knows what the sport is…here everybody knows it. Its nice to play in front of thousands of people…really nice.

How did you hear about UMD?  What interested you most about the school?

I heard about UMD just from watching online videos. I had never been to UMD before I came here (which was a little daunting when I look back at it now) but I was just so excited to be a part of the rich heritage here.

You know we love music around here on the LAS network, so what are your five favorite songs right now?  Don’t be too embarrassed to speak from the heart here.

In no particular order..,

anything by David Guetta or Jay Z

Graceland by Paul Simon

Whatcha Say by Jason Derulo

and the embarrassing one… Party in the USA by Miley Cyrus

[Editor's note: It's okay Adam... Jumbo Jack has the same problem.]

What kind of stick are you using?  What’s the string job like? Tape? Shaft?

I’m using the new STX 2010 Proton. I use the basic STX hard mesh and like to have a lot of whip. Usually just two throwing stings and a v is what I go with. The shaft is an STX scandium with just some tape at the bottom and a trigger strip almost midway up the shaft.

Who are your heroes in lacrosse?  Who made you want to come stateside and play in college?

My hero when I was growing up was a guy named Nathan Rainey who played for Australia in 1999 and 2002 with the u19 and men’s sides respectively. Although now I’m playing with him when I go home, which is great, he really was the guy I looked up to most when I was younger.

But no one person really made me want to, I always just wanted to be here to play lax. I must mention one guy though, Coach Shriver, at Boys Latin in Baltimore. Without him and him vouching for me I wouldn’t be here at MD today.

How was fall ball?  The US team scrimmages seemed awesome on video I saw… your thoughts?

Fall ball was great. As I said before we accomplished a lot during the time we had and all the guys are in great shape. The US scrimmages were a lot of fun, those guys are great lacrosse players and it was really fun to go out there and mix it up with them .

Thanks, Adam!  Sounds like you and the rest of the Terps are ready to roll this year. We wish you the best of luck this spring!

Australia Lax Update

You can just FEEL the icepick coming!

You can just FEEL the icepick coming!Lacrosse season down under is still going strong. The Australian state team from Victoria won the annual national championship competition that was held in Adelaide. Victoria has now 16 consecutive games at the national championships and has taken home the crown for the past 3 years.

The boys from Victoria ran by Western Australia 18-7 in their first game, beat a tough South Australia team that rarely loses at home in Adelaide 10-9.  WA and SA then played in the final round robin game to see who would meet back up with Victoria in the championship game.  Japan, although not eligible for the championship (because they aren’t part of Australia!) sent a sort of national team to the tourney anyway to hone their skills against some of the best in the world and although they were dominated by Victoria, the Japanese learned a lot and had a great time, I’m sure.

Victoria celebrating their 2008 Nat. Championship. they repeated in 2009.In the final, Victoria cruised to victory by dispatching WA 13-2 after leading 5-0 at half time.  Victoria is truly the sporting center of Australia and this evidenced by their strong showing in lacrosse, the multitude of Aussie Rules Football teams in the state and their love of rugby and cricket.  last year, the championships were held in Perth where Victoria edged the home side, Western Australia 11-8.  If the talent gap is increasing between these two states then the level of lacrosse in Victoria must be of the highest quality because WA lax is pretty darn good itself.

Speaking of WA lax… the season continues and although Wembley has been doing very well overall, they lost their last match to Bayswater, the third ranked team in the State.  Although Matt Driver scored 5 goals, Wembley just didn’t have it and lost 14-8.  Glenn Morley has been playing with Baysie again and his impact has been felt by the entire league.  He may be an older guy but he plays a mean D when the chips are down.  I had some great times with Glenn when I lived down in Perth and would like to congratulate him on making Australia’s 34 man roster for the upcoming World Games in Manchester, England next summer.  Also a big congrats to the Wembley boys, in particular, the University of Maryland’s Adam Sear.  To see the rest of Australia’s 34 man roster click here.

So while the summer is a little slower stateside, the action keeps on pumping all June, July and August down under.  There will be a Western Australia Lacrosse Assoc All-Star game on August 8th at 630pm for the Men.  Before that game, numerous women’s and youth all star games will be played so if you live in WA, make sure to check it out!  The location is Halladay Park in the Bayswater section of town.  After that, there are only 3 weeks left in the regular season in Perth and then the playoffs start so we’ll be sure to keep all of the LAS Nation updated as regularly as we can!

This hat is sweet, right? truckers? lax? Australia? SOLD.

More Lacrossetralia Photo Madness: Wembley Pounds Phoenix LC

As the summer rolls on here in the old US of A, club lax season is in full tilt mode down in Western Australia.  The Wembley Wolves continued to dominate the WA Smokefree State League and dismantled the Phoenix Lacrosse Club in their latest game.

They started out pretty tight with Wembley leading 4-3 after the first quarter but things got ugly soon after as Wembley took an 11-5 lead into halftime and really poured it on in the second half with a final score of 30-6. Yes, 30 to 6,  I did not e-stutter.

Great photo mashup shot by Mick Waddell taken from facebook. Hope you don’t mind, Mick!

Editor’s note: Like the photos? Check out our other Lacrossetralia posts full of beautiful lacrosse photography from down under. HERE YOU GO, MATE

Some of the younger guys played for Wembley as their usual goalie, Sam Williams, sat in favor of Steve Stojkos. Additionally, Wembley had TWO ten point scorers in Matt Diver who had 8 goals and 2 assists while Alex Brown had 6 goals and 4 assists.  Adam Sear notched 5 goals of his own and added 3 helpers for 8 points.  Lachlan Bunbury dominated the faceoff square for Wembley while John Casey added a hat trick, Jaxon Hall went 2g and 3a and Sam Ramsay (son of the legendary Aussie laxer Bob “Tractor” Ramsay) notched 2 goals of his own and adding a helper.  Even one of the defensive minded Bentley brothers added a goal when Morgan scored in the 3rd period.  Phoenix has been led all season by the Roost brothers, Nathan and Travis who have both played in the US at one point or another.  Travis has also been on Australia’s national team in the past.  Other solid players for Phoenix include Warner, Toner and Kittle.

Phoenix was on the brink of dissolution when I was down in Perth in 2001 (playing for a then struggling Wembley) so it is GREAT to see Phoenix with a full A-league team as well as Wembley back on top.  Lax in Western Australia (WA) seems to be experiencing some positive growth and continued expansion of lax around the world is great for the future of the sport.  If Phoenix can continue to grow its youth teams they will be in a solid position for the near future.

Bunbury tearing it up time and time again at the faceoff square. Courtesy of Mick Waddell’s Facebook, again!

In other news, Bayswater clings to the second spot for now after losing to East Fremantle last week 11-9.  Subiaco barely got by Wanneroo.  In that contest, Blair Coggan and Gareth Allen supplied a majority of the offense for Wanneroo as they came up a little short.

This was the last game before the midseason break in WA.  The season is cut in half there because of the National tournament where all of the State teams compete for the national championship.  A number of Wembley players will make the State team and WA will have competition from South Australia and Victoria for the Championship.  Those have been the top 3 states in Australia for quite some time with the navy and white of Victoria winning many of the championships over the last decade.  The championships will be held in Adelaide, the home of many national sporting events.

There will also be a camp held for the players who still have a shot at the national team.  I believe Adam Sear, two of the Bentley brothers and Alex Brown are still in contention for spots on the final 23 man roster.

There is also a rumor that the NLL will be playing a showcase in Adelaide in October.  Box lacrosse has been gaining in popularity over the past couple of years in Australia and the NLL seems to be taking notice.  As this story develops, we will keep the LaxNation posted but in the meantime, you can get all of the existing info on the NLL All Star Series here.  We will be keeping our eyes on this event because it could be a cool venture that has the possibility to help expand lacrosse around the world.

As always, if you’re a Septic Tank Yank or Canucklehead and you want to play lax down under let me know!  The trip is amazing and well worth the 36 hour flight.  The lax guys are friendly, the beer flows like wine (or something like that) and the people are tan and scantily dressed.  It’s like vacation ALL THE TIME!  Send an email to [email protected] to get yourself started on a Lacrossetralia journey…

As usual, many thanks to Jake Cutler for the slideshow of pictures. Jake, you are the man but it looks like Mick is giving you a run for your money with the lax photos!  Keep up the good work of spreading the gospel that is lacrosse.

Western Lacrossestralia – Wembley v. East Freo

In Western Australia, East Fremantle has long been regarded as the top club side for men’s lacrosse.  Before East Freo’s rise to prominence, Wembley Lacrosse Club was probably the top side in the WALA (Western Australia Lacrosse Assoc.) so anytime these two clubs get together for a game, the intensity and importance is guaranteed to be at the absolute highest level.LAX right on the river in Fremantle!

Wembley, which is located in the suburbs of Perth, travelled down to Fremantle for the game.  Fremantle is right on the water and is a HUGE shipping port worldwide.  It is also the starting point for Fremantle Media, a very large media conglomerate.  While most Americans have only heard of Perth in Western Australia, Fremantle is a vibrant little city with a great night life, some fantastic breweries and a cool, laid back attitude whereas Perth also has those things there is also the lure of a real downtown city center.  Fremantle is the home of Matt Schomburg, the Delfs brothers and a bunch of other Aussies that have come stateside for college.  Wembley, on the other hand, kept most of their talent at home over the years with the notable exception of Adam Sear who is currenlty on the University of Maryland roster under Dave Cottle.  Adam is a middie and will be a Senior Terp next year.  I expect to see great things from Adam next year because he is an athlete, a leader and has great character.  I coached Adam a bit when he was only 13 or 14 and he was a very good player then, the best in his age group.  Under the tutelage of players like Nathan Rainey and coaches like John Denic, Adam only got better.

The game started out pretty evenly in the first half with Wayne “Bucky” Curran, Matt Devoy and Justin Previte scoring goals in the 2nd quarter.  Previte had also scored E. Freo’s lone 1st quarter goal.  Wembley dumped in 6 goals in the first half to counter and took a slight 6-4 lead into the intermission behind solid play from Ben Reiger on D, Sam Williams in goal, Chris D’Annunzio, Nathan Rainey, Matt Driver, Sam Ramsay and Adam Sear.

The second half was ALL Wembley as the Wolves added on another 10 goals to East Freo’s 2.NOT. EVEN. CLOSE. Wolves Win! Cubs Win!  The final score was 16-6 and firmly cemented Wembley as the top team in the league through 8 rounds of play.  Right on Wembley’s heels is Bayswater LC followed by Subiaco and then East Fremantle.  Wanneroo and Phoenix round out the State League in places 5 and 6 respectively.  As usual, many thanks to our amazing Aussie photographer, Jake Cutler.  Without Jake we wouldn’t get these fantastic photos to accompany the articles and everyone out there reading would know that much less about lacrosse on the other side of the world.
