Reader Poll: Left Watching on Championship Weekend

This week’s Reader Poll takes a look at the waning days of the 2013 Major League Lacrosse season. With the Lizards officially out of playoff contention, we are down to four teams fighting for the last two spots and a chance at the Steinfeld Cup.

Here are your current standings in the MLL. The Denver Outlaws and Hamilton Nationals have both secured spots at Championship weekend and with only two games left a piece, several of the teams are now in must win mode as they fight to keep their season alive.

To help you decide, here are the four teams and each of their remaining schedules…

Chesapeake Bayhawks (7-5)

vs. Rochester Rattlers
vs. Charlotte Hounds

Both of these games matter big time for sure, but there is no question that of the four teams, Chesapeake has the easiest route to Championship weekend. Not only do they get to finish out the season at home, they are riding a wave of fresh new talent with the extraordinary return of Casey Powell, who has made an immediate impact on the field.

Charlotte Hounds (6-6)

vs. Hamilton Nationals
@ Chesapeake Bayhawks

Contrary to the Bayhawks, Charlotte easily has the hardest road to Championship weekend. While they may have a game on both the Cannons and the Rattlers, they play two of the league’s best teams to finish out their season. If they win, look for the Hounds to surprise some people on Championship Weekend. The Hounds lost to both of these teams to the tune of 16-15 earlier this year.

Boston Cannons (5-7)

vs. Ohio Machine
vs. Rochester Rattlers

Boston is climbing at the right time, at least for now. Despite losing their last two games (to the Nationals and Bayhawks, respectively), they’ve managed to win four out of the last six games, putting them in prime position to sneak their way into the playoffs. While the Machine don’t have a chance at making the playoffs, they could certainly play spoiler for the Cannons as they look to win out the season and avenge an earlier season loss to the Rattlers.

Rochester Rattlers (5-7)

@ Chesapeake Bayhawks
@ Boston Cannons

The Rattlers also need to win-out to have a chance to keep their season going. At 5-7, they have no choice but to become road warriors and grind out each game. While the Rattlers beat the Cannons earlier this year, I think they will be seeing a much improved Cannons team, and Bayhawks team for that matter, in the final two weeks of the regular season.
