I agree completely with this, but I also see the point Barbarosa is making. Danowski is an exceptional athlete. Most kids are not. Playing multiple sports depends partly on your athletic ability, and partly on the level of those sports at your school. If it's a state championship level football team in a football crazy state or an elite level basketball team, you better be a pretty special athlete if you hope to make the team, much less contribute. Not all kids have the opportunity to play multiple sports. However I definitely agree that if they do have the chance, they should.

Great article!
I agree 100%. I can vouch from experience. Playing just about every sport as a kid creates a certain athleticism that makes picking up a new sport way easier. Definitely makes for a better athlete, which in turn makes a better recruit.

I love the idea of the post and the concept of lacrosse players playing other sports. But the flipside of this coin, is that we're asking our kids to play in other sports which are ALSO year-around, overspecialized sports. The lacrosse kids at the local high school here have NO SHOT at making the football, basketball or soccer teams. Those teams are filled with year-around football, basketball and soccer players. The teams are good; many multiple-state champions, and a part-time, normal kid, can't participate, they'll get cut. It's ugly, I wish it weren't so. But there's more to the problem than to just tell lacrosse parents "Don't let your kid specialized." It takes a village. ha ha.

I played football basketball and lacrosse. I was average at one and below average at two. I still took parts from each into the other and I had 3 times the friends. These kids that lax all year aren't as good as kids who play three sports and still have a stick in their hands all the time.

Why wouldn't you want to recruit an athlete who played quarterback, point guard and attack? Who is going to be more comfortable in a big game? The specialist or the kid who has been competing all year?
