Registration is now open for the second annual Saratoga Lacrosse Shootout. The 2014 Shootout features youth boys’ competition in grades 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, and High School A and B divisions. Rhino’s Ryan Powell and Lake Placid Lacrosse’s Kevin Leveille will serve as the tournament co-directors for this second annual event, which takes place July 4-6, 2014, at beautiful Gavin Park in the Town of Wilton, NY.
We thought it would be a good idea to ask Rhino himself some questions about the 2014 version of the event, and of course, Ryan Powell obliged!
We see there is a 3 v 3 tourney along the full field games. Any chance the winners could challenge the Powell Brothers to a bragging rights game?
Winners will be able to challenge the Powell Bros for sure. The winners can name the time and location and the Powells will be there – Bring it on!!
Tell us more about the new location. It looks sweet, and maybe even more intimate! How important is a good location for this event? What is the backdrop/view from the fields?
The location for this event is perfect! Gavin Park is just minutes to downtown Saratoga Springs and features 10+ beautifully maintained grass fields. The park offers teams a perfect venue with top notch game fields and a lay-out that will provide an intimate and festival like feel. The “FUN ZONE” was a hit last year and will again be a main focus of this years Shootout. Our goal is to have people get excited from the minute they arrive at Gavin Park!
You got to spend some time in Saratoga this Summer, so what was one thing that jumped out at you about the area from last year?
Saratoga Springs is such a cool town. It’s one of those small town feeling places that you just want to park near main street, get out and walk the town. Stopping to shop, eat some good food, and have some small talk conversations with the friendly locals. I love being in a place that feels so comfortable, that is so beautiful, and offers so many outdoorsy type activities. I didn’t get a chance to see the fireworks in town last year, but I’m very much looking forward to spending time at Congress Park on Friday July 4th, 2014.
How does it feel to be back and settled in Upstate? I know it holds a fond place in your heart… is that part of the reason you want to see this event take off? Does area pride play a role?
Being back in Syracuse after 8 awesome years in Portland has been great. I love the fact that this tournament is in Saratoga and just a short drive from CNY because my entire family comes to town! Last year, the entire Powell Family walked in the Forth of July parade! Nothing like family!
“Last year Rhino and LPL hosted the first ever Saratoga Lacrosse Shootout, with the goal of creating something that was more than just another summer tournament,” said Powell. “The event turned into a lacrosse festival… a place where teams, players and their families enjoyed the perfect combination of fun and competition in an unmatched atmosphere like Saratoga, New York.” “Saratoga is one of the most historic and hip places to play lacrosse,” said Kevin Leveille. “In addition to great lacrosse competition, there are a variety of nearby sites and activities for participants to enjoy.”
The Saratoga Lacrosse Shootout kicks off with opening ceremonies on Friday night as part of the Fourth of July festivities that will be taking place in Saratoga. The opening ceremonies will feature the world famous “Powell Hour” performance, including the legendary Powell brothers. Throughout the weekend there will be plenty of off-field fun including professional player demonstrations, player and coaching clinics directed by college coaches, 3v3 mini tournament, player’s lounge, food trucks, vendor village, live music and more.
