I have the same problem as Nick Weinberg. Some college teams have a lot of Canadians so having college teams represent America is unfeisiable. Imagine Denver without Mark Matthews, they wouldn't be nearly as good. So what I would do if a team like Denver won is have Coach Tierney pick a player like Rob Pannell to fill in for Matthews and do that with all of the Canadians on the National championship team during International play.

Great read! Valid points can be made to both, college or pro representation, but I say go with College National Champs.

Conner, this is a great post and fascinating idea. I would love to see this kind of "playoff" for the right to represent the US on the international stage.

I went to London, ON in 2006 to watch the final four and immediately noticed the lack of team chemistry (primarily offensive) during the US semi-final game against Australia (US won by 3). Biggest problem the whole weekend was the decision not to bring a dedicated FOGO. However, our team offense seemed to struggle despite the 3 Powell brothers Boyle, Harrison, Streibel, etc.. ultimately getting embarrassed by Canada in the final. I agree with you that a balanced NCAA team with developed chemistry, defensive packages, offensive strategies, etc. would do quite well in the World Championships.

That being said, expecting a collegiate team to extend their season through the NCAA playoffs into July for the world games would be daunting request. February 1 - May 31st is an exhausting season as it is. IMO, this would be the biggest challenge.

Another comment here highlighted the issue of Canadians being ineligible for team USA. The number of Canadian players is of course growing in NCAA lacrosse and some of these guys play super-critical roles for their respective clubs. Their absence could be detrimental to a team's chemistry.

Anyway, cool idea and again, great post. I'd really like to see a more rigorous training program and exhibition schedule for Team USA leading up to future international tournaments. There's no excuse for us to lose given the wealth of talent in this country. Just need to put it all together like we did in Manchester.

I've seen every World Championship in person or on the tube since 1982. There are 2 things that Team USA MUST have to defeat Canada. Our best face-off guy and your best goalie. Without them, we're sunk. The NCAA Champs will not have those 2 prime ingredients.

i like the idea but the only problem would be that more and more good college teams have at least one or two (or in Denvers case 5 or 6) very good canadian players on their teams. This would be especially problematic of the canadian player was one of the teams stars such as mathews, palmer, etc. But i do still like the idea if it wasn't for that
