Hot Pot Of Lax: Post Holiday Giving

Christmas Tree farm

Welcome to our Holiday Hot Pot!  It’s a great time of year filled with family, traditions and the giving of gifts.  Of course the giving of gifts also means the receiving of gifts, and for a great many lacrosse player out there this means new lax gear.  And new gear always means one thing: an opportunity to GROW THE GAME, of course!

Did you get a new head or shaft?  Maybe even a complete stick?  Well, I think you know what to do!  Give your old one to a friend who might be interested in playing lacrosse, or give it to a kid in your neighborhood or apartment building and get him hooked on the game.  Reach out to another potential lacrosse player, be a friend and make a small difference.  You can do the same thing with a any piece of padding, or even pieces of apparel like shorts, hats and sweatshirts.

Or perhaps you are truly fortunate and you received more than one piece of new equipment as a gift!  If that’s the case, then you could consider doing something a little bigger, and you could round up as much equipment as possible and make a donation to a local not for profit lacrosse program, or a local high school with a new program.  The second hand gear that is donated to schools and NFPs is HUGELY important, and it will go to great use in the hands of a kid who really needs it!  All that and you’ll be spreading the game to a new place.  Not too shabby!

Of course if you’re feeling REALLY thankful and adventurous, you might start an equipment drive in your town, and hit up all your friends for their old gear.  A mass donation to a local program, school or NFP can be a game changer in the quest to Grow The Game.

I try to do my part with volunteering, giving and coaching, but over the past year or two I have also built up a serious arsenal of lacrosse sticks.  At one point I probably had 30 or more heads and over 12 pairs of gloves.  I probably had 8 helmets.  Sadly, it took me getting to that point of hoarding to realize that this equipment could be put to much better use, and that it should not be sitting in my office.

I’m down to 4 helmets now (soon to be 3), 4 pairs of gloves and 7 sticks.  And I’m bent on getting down to (at most) 2 helmets (1 box, 1 field), 2 pairs of gloves and 3 sticks in the coming weeks.  I think I can do it.  Then it’s down to 1 helmet, 1 pair of gloves and two sticks.  It will be like high school all over again!  The quest to give continues…

Ok, I dropped my New Year’s resolution on you guys a little early.  But it’s time to give the game of lacrosse in 2012!!!!!  So are you in, or what?
