Union Gets Program’s First Win

Union County College Men’s Lacrosse won their first game in program history, by beating then #10 Finger Lakes CC, 12-11, with no time remaining. With only 7 seconds left in the game, and the score tied at 11, Coach Roussey called a timeout, and gave the ball to midfielder Nate Hill.

Hill drove right down the alley, then came back left to put the shot past the Finger Lakes goalie opposite side high. It was a great win for the 1st year program. Union is now currently sitting at 2-3, with a 10-6 win over Alfred State, and losses to #6 Delhi (16-7), #10 ASA (17-13), and CCBC Catonsville (18-6).  Next up for the Union Owls is #7 Harford at home on March 20th at 7:00 pm.

Q&A With OCC’s Coach Wilbur

OCC entered the year as the clear cut #1. Does that add any pressure to what you are trying to accomplish?

I don’t think the rankings are really any more pressure. We get everyone’s best shot and with the talented teams out there, we always have to be prepared. I do not think it is any more pressure.

How have you maintained such consistency over the last bunch of years? How difficult is it to reload the team each year with new players?

It is always difficult at the Juco level to reload due to losing half your team every year. We are fortunate with where we are located, and the success we have had to get good players to come here, year in and year out.

What does the future hold for NJCAA lacrosse? Do you think we will continue to see one or two dominant teams? Or will the wealth spread a bit?

I think Juco lacrosse right now is as competitive as it’s ever been. It is definitely not just 1 or 2 good teams. I feel there is a group of 6-8 teams, who are very good and another group of 5-6 who are getting better. The top teams in JuCo have as much, or more, talent than many of the D2 or D3 level teams. If you you look at the results from when the better JuCo teams scrimmage four year schools, you usually see the Junior College teams have a lot of success.

Thanks to Coach Wilbur for the answers and education! We’ll be sure to check in with the Lazers again soon.

ASA College Video

ASA Vs. Delaware Tech Highlights:

Here are some crazy stats from this game… Casey Jackson had 9G, 4 A. Fellow Canadians, Colton Borthwick, was 3G, 7A and Brandon Goodwin had 4G, 5A. Kevin Hartley picked up 12 GBs. Not too shabby at all!

And don’t miss our video highlights from ASA’s big win over Dean in Brooklyn, NY. We also have a large gallery of photos up on Facebook.

NJCAA FINALS Predictions

According to last week’s poll, 67% of you think OCC will win the NJCAA title this year. So…

Who (OUTSIDE OF OCC) Will Make The NJCAA Final?
