The NYC Report: Upsets, Favorites, & College Bound Players

Editor’s Note: Welcome to the New York City Report, brought to you by Apple Lacrosse, NYC’s first lacrosse store! This week Billy Nguyen dives deep into the world of Public School lacrosse and introduces us to some of the teams in the PSAL for 2014.

Welcome back to another exciting week of lacrosse in NYC. Tottenville remains as the only unbeaten team left in the “A” division. Meanwhile, Eagle is 6-0 over in the B with a scare against Midwood, winning 9-8. We are in full swing and all the public schools in NYC are going on spring break. Most teams will still host practice over break while others will look to scrimmage other clubs.

Game of the Week

Curtis knocks off FDA 13-3

FDA was undefeated and looking really tough heading into their game with Curtis, but the guys from SI put on a show and took the game by a 10 goal margin. With FDA looking like one of the top North teams, and Curtis looking like a middle of the pack South team, the edge right now is in the South’s favor in a big way. This game can singlehandedly make the argument that the 3 best teams in the City right now are all on Staten Island.

Curtis got relatively balanced scoring, and had six players score at least one goal. Joshus Sanchez led the way with 4 goals and an assist, while Eamon Murtha went off with four assists and two goals, for six points. He also had a team high 7 assists. Omar Alhajiko was strong in goal making 11 saves.

We also have to give a big shout out to Tottenville for taking down New Dorp is pretty convincing fashion two weeks ago in a night game. Long trip out there, but well worth it!

MidSeason 2014 PSAL Championship Div. Recap

With half of the season in the books now, let’s take a look at the standings and see what it all really means…

Championship North
Benjamin N. Cardozo High School (5-1)
Frederick Douglass Academy (5-1)
Herbert H. Lehman (3-5)
Hunter College High School (2-4)
Long Island City (0-6)

Cardozo took a tough loss to FDA earlier in the season in a close 6-5 game. Frederick Douglass dropped the ball against a strong Curtis team last week losing 13-3. Frederick Douglass travels to Cardozo on Thursday for a rematch. Off to a slow start, the Lehman Lions sit at 3-5 but do not sleep on the lions. Losing one point games early on to FDA and Hunter hurt. Look for the Lions to make a run in the second half of the season. They have to!

At 2-4, Hunter started the year with a big win over Lehman 8-7. Since then they have slowed down and shown to be real inconsistent. Is this a rebuilding year for Hunter or can they prove otherwise in the second half of the season?

Championship South
Tottenville (5-0)
New Dorp (5-1)
Curtis (4-2)
James Madison (1-5)
Port Richmond (0-5)

Tottenville seems to be cruising in the South in the first half of the season. While every game so far has been a blowout, New Dorp kept it close with Tottenville and trailed 6-4 at half time but the Pirates showed their depth and finished New Dorp 11-6. The second half should prove to be interesting as the Pirates will face North teams to round out the year.

New Dorp is sitting at 5-1 with a tough loss against Tottenville and a slippery win against Lehman 9-7. Cougars will finish their last 4 games on the road. Interesting note, every single player on this roster is either a Jr/Sr. On a related note, Former New Dorp Goalie, Chris Fiore, earned ECAC Mid-Atlantic Player of the week honors.

Curtis has been quietly picking up wins early on. The Warriors put up a fight against Tottenville losing 14-7. Curtis could be the dark horse this year and make a run for it, they lit up FDA 13-3 and gave them their first loss of the year. Here are some photos from Curtis’ game against Madison via Alton Richardson Sr.

Top 3 leading scorers

EXTRA
