Going D1 faces three obstacles out west, money, fan interest and Title IX. Few school have the lacrosse resources the John Paul assembled in Michigan, especially the supportive (financial) alumni. Lacosse west of the Mississippi remains a niche game that a small number love. The Grow the game effort is working, but the time constant is likely to be long.

Where did you get the idea that Uncle Phil runs Oregon athletics? Oh yeah, I remember now.

Well if I were you, I'd reach out to the MCLA team at OU. See if they're willing to do clinics for kids to learn the game. Then YOU would have to find those kids. Maybe they'd be your age, maybe younger. But the point is to get as many kids out there as possible. Ask the OU team to bring extra sticks for the kids to use and return. Then if they're hooked, hand them an info sheet with a link to where they can buy a good cheap stick, and keep the clinics rolling from there!

It would take a lot of work, but if you are willing to be the guy who does it (someone has to!), the next HS laxer to move to Norman might not be in the same situation. We're always down to talk more in-depth so hit us up with questions right here and we'll try to make this happen with you!

Exactly! It's all about money. Every time this discussion comes up people start chiming in with "wouldn't it be cool if school X..." or "I think school Y is going to..." Colorado, which someone mentioned above, is a good example. Yes the sport is getting pretty big in Colorado. Yes CU has very few varsity sports. But the questions still remains...how can they do it? They don't have the money. CU athletics, like most athletic departments, loses money.

Fun Fact about U of Oklahoma - The athletic director is a UMD alum and loves Lacrosse, just fighting title IX and the funding battle...maybe in a couple years, or once that school in ATX adds the sport they'll get going

At the Youth/HS lax Level, Oklahoma did just launch their first High School Lax associations (includes Wichita and NW Arkansas). Not that great, but they have a few good coaches and a lot of good people getting the leagues up and running. A LOT of growing pains between now and the next step but they're headed in the right direction.

Also before i moved away from OK two years ago, There were a lot of rumors about D3 schools looking to add lax in the near future, not sure where that stands today...

I think there is absolutely no way that Northwestern gets a NCAA team in the next 15 years. Adding a lacrosse team has little to nothing to do with location/women’s programs. It comes down to one thing, money. Teams that make more can afford to throw money in the toilet by adding a NCAA men’s lacrosse team. No one likes to hear it, but NCAA women’s golf has better margins than men’s lacrosse. In the Big Ten (or Twelve, or whatever) the top three profit earning universities, based on 2010 profits from the only two college sports that generate profits, were Penn State, Michigan, and Ohio State in that order. Coincidence? Hardly. Northwestern ranked 11th, only beating out Purdue. If you were going to put money on the next Big Ten school to add an NCAA program, it would be Michigan State who ranked 4th in the Big Ten generating about $35m last year.
