When you live on an RV for a month, things can get interesting. No matter what, however, we had an absolute blast. When you’re putting something like the Grow The Game Tour together, it really all comes down to the team. If you have a great team, you can accomplish anything. We’re thankful that we were able to put together such a phenomenal group of game growers for the trip.

The security cameras at the Walmart in Twin Falls, Idaho, didn’t know what hit them. Literally.

MP never missed a good chance to film. With a camera on his hip, he documented our trip.

Bear joined us during the first half of the tour through Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana. Life on the Dutchie really got Bear going. It didn’t take long for his pirate blood to start flowing.

We really like this photo because you can clearly see everyone there is paying attention! It’s not every day you get to ask MP about the sport of lacrosse, and we love that the Seaspray guys aren’t wasting a minute with one of the best to ever play the game. Well done fellas!

The first ever Missoula Elite 100 was held on October 5th and 6th in Missoula, Montana. The event featured 100 of the best junior high and high school boys lacrosse players from Montana and Northern Idaho. Offering a mix of instruction and gameplay, the event offered an unparelleled opportunity for players to receive coaching from some of the game’s top performers, Mike Powell, Matt Gibson and Ken Clausen.

After this year’s event, lacrosse in the State of Montana may never be the same. Before we tell you why with words, we’ll share some visuals, and maybe you’ll see what we saw up there.

First up is a video produced by Scott Krueger, a current player on the University of Montana men’s lacrosse team.

Sunday, October 21st, 2012 - On a beautiful sunny day at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, fans entered Kezar Stadium ready for a battle. The 4th annual San Francisco Fall Lacrosse Classic featured a matchup between Lehigh and Ohio State, two physical teams with a lot to prove, as they prepare for the 2013 season.

From the very first whistle to the end of the 5th quarter, players from either team were chomping at the bit, playing for a win, listening to their coaches, and trying to improve. For a fall ball exhibition game, we witnessed some pretty passionate lacrosse.

Lehigh left Kezar victorious over the Buckeyes 15-13, unofficially of course. Below are select photos from the bout. It was a physical and high-scoring game, and it was fun for the spectators, who definitely enjoyed the lack of a horn throughout the game.

We were able to have a presence at this event thanks to our recent journey to San Francisco with the Grow The Game Tour. It was a pleasure to take in the game at Kezar Stadium and get a first-hand account of what it’s like to attend the San Francisco Fall Classic, which I had heard so much about.

While it was a wonderful event and I enjoyed the action on the field, the thing that stood out to me the most was what happened prior to the game. There was a free youth clinic that was like nothing I had ever seen before. During the clinic, which was sponsored by Maverik Lacrosse and led by Matt Oglesby of All West Lacrosse, the Lehigh and Ohio State coaches and players interacted with and executed drills for more than one hundred kids, all of whom had been chosen to participate by random lottery.

This wasn’t a clinic staffed by Lehigh and Ohio State freshmen or players on the injured list. It was a clinic staffed by nearly every player on each roster and every coach that made the trip. During passing and catching sessions, there were nearly enough college lacrosse players to match up one with every aspiring young athlete. Watching from afar, I found the scene to be a bit surreal and quite inspiring. That kind of one on one time is invaluable.

As the clinic wound down to an end, I had the opportunity to observe Lehigh Head Coach Kevin Cassese and Ohio State Head Coach Nick Myers as they spent time chatting with some of the young players. Both coaches were smiling and laughing; you could tell they were happy to be there, enjoying their favorite sport on a beautiful day in San Francisco. Such positive attitudes carried by these coaches must have had a direct impact on their players too. Everyone was having a good time growing the game.

I had the brief opportunity to speak with Tom Mistele, event organizer and member of the BAYS Foundation Leadership Team, about the success of the event over the years. He informed me that the main way they measure success is based on how much money is raised through tickets sales for the BAYS Foundation, a nonprofit organization that has awarded $225,000 in grants since 2009, the year the Fall Lacrosse Classic was born.

Tom explained to me that planning the event is always a challenge because every individual involved is a volunteer. The staff takes pride in being well-organized and works hard to attract the best possible teams to the event every year. It certainly doesn’t hurt that lacrosse in California is on the infinite rise and San Francisco is such a cool place.

Lehigh and Ohio State now join Johns Hopkins, Notre Dame, North Carolina, Denver, Harvard, and Brown as teams that have participated at the event, and as a result, had a positive impact on the growth of the game in Northern California.

Monday, October 15th

We know, we were going to head to Portland on Tuesday. We decided to check out downtown Seattle as planned and got some quality filming done for a couple new LaxAllStars and Grow The Game Tour featurettes and commercials. Unfortunately for us though, Seattle decided to be Seattle and threw and solid storm at us, luckily it was right at the end of our filming so we powered through and decided to start making the trip south.

I have some family in Centralia, Washington, about 90 miles south of Seattle, so along the way we chose to make a surprise stop in Centralia at the best BBQ & Deli joint/Honey Hut in the United States. The place is called Centralia Deli, Steak & BBQ and just might be the most welcoming restaurant in Washington.

Nothing better than a home cooked meal after being on the road for a while.

After gorging ourselves on food and great company for a few hours, we loaded back up the RV, and made a short trip to a local RV park to rest our weary heads.

Tuesday, October 16th

• Arrive in Portland, OR – Drive time: 2 hrs

After getting into Portland, we parted ways with Mike and Henry for a few days. Mike went to spend some quality time with family before the event on Thursday and Henry had to head to Los Angeles to get a little work done before meeting up with us again for our final GTG Tour stop this weekend in San Francisco.

The rest of us have tied ourselves down to a local coffee shop to get some solid time in on the computer.

It’s been pretty real here in Portland. We’ve been able to take the downtime to get back to GTG‘ing the interweb and take some of the burden off CW’s shoulders. While work and meetings have taken up a huge chunk of our time, a few of us have been able to take in some of what Portland has to offer in our freetime – some fondue, the MAX, Voodoo donuts, and even the Nike Employee store. Right now though, we are just hashing out some last minute details before we head south to Lakeridge HS to take in the Rhino 3.3 tournament this evening.

We are excited to take a little different approach to this tour stop. Our friends at Rhino Lacrosse have helped put together a sweet 3v3 tournament at the local tennis courts in Lake Oswego. How often do you get to play against professional lacrosse players?!

And if you REALLY think your team has what it takes, then you can challenge Ryan Powell, Mike Powell and Matt Gibson to a game of 3.3, but be forewarned… these guys are good!

Here are some of the basics:

- There are two FREE 3-on-3 tournaments! The first is for kids in 5th and 6th grade. The second is for kids in 7th and 8th grade.

- Teams are limited to ONLY three players total. All players must wear a helmet, gloves and use a short stick. Goalies will be provided by Rhino Lacrosse.

- There is no checking, and no crank shots. It’s all about skill and inside work in this exciting format!

- If you want to play, follow the instructions below and make it happen!!! Teams will be accepted on a first come first serve basis.

Simply email info@rhinolacrosse.com with the following information:

Grade Division (5/6 grade or 7/8 grade)

Saturday, October 13th, 2012 - The first ever NCAA Division 1 men’s lacrosse game in the State of Washington drew nearly 4,000 local fans to the Starfire Sports Complex on a rainy Saturday afternoon in Tukwila, WA. The Denver Pioneers beat the University of Maryland Terrapins 12-9 in a physical, wet, back-and-forth fall scrimmage.

We were able to capture some fantastic shots of the game even though it was raining, and using our local guy, Dave Ogle, proved smart. He knew the rain was coming, and he came prepared!

Friday, October 12th

To everyone’s chagrin, I set the ETD for a “hard 8:00 am”. Unfortunately for me that turned into a soft 8:30 am departure, fortunately everyone MapQuest’s calculations were off and it was a quick 2-3 hour tour across the border.

Initial impressions? AMAZING! Great work ethic, even better energy, and for something we just set-up in the last two weeks, we had 40+ kids show up and several more that were trying to make the trip. From the look of things, Hermiston, OR is off on the right foot and doing everything they can to Grow The Game and get their name on the lacrosse world map.

Being from a non-hotbed area myself, I have a special place in my heart for these kids and it was great to see them laughing, asking questions, and soaking up every bit of knowledge being dropped on them.

Arrived at our lovely RV Park to the tune of some rain and a bunch of over-sized Halloween decorations. Doug Appleton, Blake and Cort Kim arrived to give Mike and Henry some much needed time away from the RV and allow Jeff and I to stretch out a little in the Dutchmen. We are currently catching-up on a few last minute details  before we catch some shut eye and get ready for a big day tomorrow at the Seatown Classic.

Saturday, October 13th

Made it into the beautiful city of Tukwila without any major hold-ups. We were welcomed with open arms by the facility and they even made an exception to allow us to park the noble Dutchmen in their complex (even though they had a “No RV’s” sign out front).

Before we could even set up the kids started coming up to the booth to check out all the LAS and Easton gear. A little before noon, Mike and the Easton gang started putting on a little show for a good amount of young laxers in the area. Big shout out to the Washington Lacrosse Chapter for hosting us and giving us prime real estate for the event. Hugely appreciated the opportunity given to us (Thanks Dave!).

Shortly after the opening whistle, we started to take down the booth so we could all get to work getting some quality coverage for the event. Our fearless leader, Jeff and David Ogle took on the task of photos, while yours truly did his best to get some video highlights of the match.

• 2:00 – 4:00 PM – Maryland vs. Denver

All in all it was a quality match-up between two top contenders. Denver went away with the 12-9 victory but it was very cool to see 3,400+ show up to this event. From a few talks with some of the dedicated Game Growers who helped make this event possible, this has been something that has been in the works for FIVE years. That’s dedication, my friends!

• 4:00 – 4:30 PM – Autographs

Both teams made their way over to the sideline to sign some autographs and mingle with the fans who made their way from many places to watch the game. It was really cool to see all the local support for several Pacific Northwesters who played on either of the teams. Love to see how much the game has grown.

Sunday, October 14th or Monday, October 15th

• TBA – Grow The Game Tour: Seattle Clinic

Unfortunately, as of now at least, we will probably not be able to put on a little clinic here. Instead we are taking the next couple of days to catch-up on some much needed work and make sure we give the Seatown Classic the coverage it deserves. That doesn’t mean we are done trying to Grow The Game in Seattle though. We are going to try and meet up with some Game Growers tonight from the area to see what we can do to further help their cause.

A few photos from our trip to Browning, Montana, the largest community on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. We had originally scheduled a clinic that would take place right after schools got out in Browning, but bad weather hindered our plans.

Instead, we visited each elementary school right as the final bell rang, introducing ourselves to kids and parents leaving the building, passing out GTG wristbands and spreading the word that a new youth lacrosse team was coming to town.

The reservation is home to the Blackfeet tribe. Of the approximately 15,560 enrolled tribal members, there are about 7,000 living on or near the reservation. Nearly 27 percent of enrolled members are of three-fourths or greater Indian blood. The Blackfeet Indians are commonly thought to have acquired their name because of the characteristic black color of their moccasins, painted or darkened with ashes.

Saturday, Oct. 6 – Day 9

We spent Friday night at Kevin Flynn’s house in Missoula, Montana. He had plenty of couches and beds up for grabs, but the real veterans opted for another night on the Dutchie parked out front.  We’re in pretty deep.

Saturday morning started with the usual blast session, then we headed to Dornblaser Field at the University of Montana.  Henry Fitzpatrick, Krieg Shaw, and I got the chance to suit up with Team 406, a group comprised of Montana alumni and friends.

It was refreshing to get back on the field, but the real action came in between games.  Kids were swarming the Dutchie checking out what LAS and Easton had to offer.  Any kid who came up and didn’t have a stick (or had a really old one) was surprised with a free Easton wand.

At one point, a youngster challenged Mike to a game of LaxAllStars Cornhole.  His name was Dean, and Mike seemed to like that name based on how many times he said it.

Later in the day, MP put on a little shooting clinic, and I followed it up with some stick tricks.  A hang glider flew about 10 feet over the crowd during Mike’s demo and he improvised, “It’s all part of my show.”  It actually did seem like it was planned, but I’m convinced this hang glider didn’t have his head on straight.  Either way, it was live action.  We ended the day coaching a scrimmage at the Montana Elite 100 clinic.

It was amazing to see the improvement of the players over the course of just 2 days.  The kids were really soaking up everything we were teaching.  There’s no doubt in my mind that Montana lacrosse will continue to rise in the future.

In the post game, we also learned that it was Kevin’s birthday, so we sang to him as is tradition.  It also called for celebration; Missoula has a hopping night life and copious amount of parking.  This allowed us to bring the Dutchie out on the town with us.  Eventually we parked the Dutchie outside Kevin’s house again, choked the genny (generator), and got electrified.

Sunday, Oct. 7 – Day 10

Sunday was a huge day for the GTG gang.  We spent the morning back at the University of Montana to watch the end of the MCLA tournament.

Some of the kids from the Missoula Elite clinic showed up again, and you could tell they had caught the stick trick addiction.  Even better, they were using the Easton sticks we gave them.  ”Next time I see you I’ll have that behind the back one down,” said one of the kids.  The encounter with them was a reminder that we were tangibly growing the game here in Montana.

After the tournament we headed to a gas station for a few hours to snag some internet and fuel up before our big clinic on the Flathead Reservation in Ronan, Montana. It’s important to note that Krieg Shaw has done all the driving on the Dutchie thus far.  He deserves a lot of credit even though the Dutcher is a dream boat to drive.

We didn’t know what to expect when we arrived in Ronan.  We rolled out some balls and goals on a small field and waited.  After about a half hour, though, about 50 kids of all ages and their parents had showed up.

We opened up with a traditional prayer by our new friend Alex who lives and teaches in Ronan.  He has been a big part of lacrosse growth in the area, and he’s also a great goalie (we played with him in Missoula).

Alex’s prayer emphasized that lacrosse is more than a sport – it is a medicine, a community glue, and a way to please the creator.  Looking at it through this lens turns lacrosse into something far greater than just a game.  For us GTGers, that’s been an emphasis.  We’ve stressed how all aspects of our lives have been intertwined with lacrosse, from our childhood to our education to our friendships.  This makes lacrosse, and its growth, all the more special.

Overall, the Ronan clinic was a tremendous success.  We had introduced tons of locals to the sport and gave them sticks to start their journeys.  Finally we packed up and headed north to Glacier National Park, where Kevin Flynn has a cabin. We blew off some steam and watched the Northern Lights around a camp fire.  Tomorrow we tour the National Park and head to the Blackfeet reservation up north.
