Great article in the economist. Makes a good case that corruption in soccer will keep China down for a long time. Will lacrosse go the same way? The best way to grow the game is from the bottom up, but that may be difficult with the Chinese political system.

Great post Connor, and yes China will be one of the stronger program in the FIL if they get the Chinese government behind them. That will change once Lacrosse become Olympic sport, massive funding will come to support more than most of other national programs. China Lacrosse had done a lot (and Japan done it's part to help) during the time they've been around, considering their limitations they faced. It's good to see another potentially strong Asian program emerge, by the time Denver game comes I hope to see more of Asia team being represented.

One thing to consider about athletics in China is that they succeed as individuals and often have a very hard time with team sports.

Even the team sports they succeed at (Gymnastics, Table Tennis, Fencing, Swimming Relay) are generally individual oriented sports that just happen to award a medal based on team results.

The one team based even that they do well in is syncronized swimming.

The big difference is the way athletes are handled. Here in North America, you often put your child in team sports or group events. In China, gifted youngsters are often segregated from other youths and given a significant amount of one on one coaching as individuals. Team sports are often ignored or not developed until an athlete from a different sport "washes out" and picks up something else.

You'll see an excellent Chinese soccer team well before a good Chinese lacrosse team.
