Game Photos: Towson Escapes Navy With Win

The Towson Tigers made the trip to Annapolis to take on the Navy Midshipmen on Tuesday night, and escaped with a tight 8-7 victory on the road. Navy was up, 7-5 about halfway through the 3rd quarter, and looking strong, when Towson stepped up their play on both ends of the field, making for an exciting finish for Towson, and a heartbreaking loss for Navy fans.

The Tigers were able to hold Navy scoreless for the final 22 minutes of the game, and in the same time period, they pumped in three goals of their own, taking them from down 2, to up 1, at the end.

Andrew Wescavage was big in goal for Towson all night long, as he made 14 saves on the night, with six of them coming in the first quarter. Navy got out to a 3-0 lead in the 1st, and had it not been for Wescavage, Towson could have been in much worse shape.

The Tigers fought back in the 2nd, outpacing Navy 5-2 in the period, and creating a 5-5 tie at the half. Navy scored the first two goals of the third quarter, and then the above scenario played out, where Towson’s D clamped down in a big way.

Towson got two goals from Cory Dobyns and Andrew Hodgson. Dobyns also had an assist. Navy got 2 goals from Bryce Dabbs, and Sam Jones had three points on a goal and two assists. Nolan Hickey made 7 saves in net, and almost allowed Navy to get back in the game, as he made 4 saves in the 4th quarter to keep Towson from increasing their lead.

Towson was 1-3 on man up chances, and was not called for a penalty all night. Navy had seven more shots than Towson (35-28), and was dominant on face offs (winning 12-7), while GBs were almost even. Both teams cleared the ball well, and had a few turnovers, but neither team stood out in either of those categories.

Navy’s Head Coach, Rick Sowell, is starting to see some success at Navy, and this is evident, even in a loss. The team is competitive, and trying to impose their will on the opposition. The team still lacks a couple of go-to-guys when it comes to offense, but ball movement and team play have definitely improved. Navy has always had well-conditioned athletes… but now those guys are looking more and more like lacrosse players too. It’s great to see, and we hope the Midshipmen can get back to where they were in 2004 (and long before that!).

Navy is now 3-4, has lost three one goal games this season. Their next game is against Holy Cross (3-3) on March 17th. Towson moves to 3-4, and will play at Duke (also 3-4) on March 16th.
