Hopkins Tops Michigan: Recap And Highlights

Editor’s Note: Please welcome Lance Antoine to LAS! Lance will be writing about all things lacrosse this year, and for his first post, he’s recapping the Michigan – Hopkins game, and telling us why we shouldn’t look past the Wolverines just yet.

This past weekend, there were many young D-1 teams that played some “big name” colleges, and while none of them necessarily matched up to High Point’s victory over Towson, which was a true Cinderella story, Michigan vs. Hopkins was still a good game, and one that got me excited.

Senior Mike Poppleton, of Johns Hopkins, won 17 of 18 face-offs and this gave Hop a great edge in consistent possessions. Hopkins also got about 70% of the ground balls and this helped them to finish the game with a 17-8 win over Michigan.

Hopkins played exceptionally all game despite their large lead. On the other hand, Michigan, despite losing did show some signs of potential. Their quick offense got the ball around as Michigan scored the first goal of the game. As the game went on, Michigan’s offense was not a match for Hopkins defense, and as you could have guessed the Wolverine’s quick double team defensive tactic was not match for the 4th ranked Blue Jays’ offensive prowess.

I do have to say that Michigan has some freshman that showed true signs of potential. The Wolverine’s goalie, freshman Gerald Logan, made 12 saves. That’s a 41% save percentage, not to shabby for a freshman goalie tending against one of the best teams in college lacrosse. Also, freshman Peter Kraus and Mike Hernandez both showed potential, by scoring two great  goals apiece.

Hopkins advances to 3-0 and will take on #14 Princeton on Friday in a big game. Michigan moves to 0-3 and will take on Army this Saturday, in the Orange Bowl Classic in Miami, Florida. Just remember the season is young, and while Hopkins is obviously a contender, don’t count out Michigan. This is a team that can still make some waves.
